Sunday 3rd September. Alaskan Geological Survey.

Post by ianfisher 101 »

Fellow Pilots, the Alaskan Glaciers are receding and as part of the study into this we've been hired by the Alaskan Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys to take a closer look. The DGGS is part of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources with Geologists and staff researching, interpretating, storing and distributing Alaska's geologic data. We start today's flight at Yakutat (PAYA) then fly along the coast via Yakataga and Cordova-Smith for a full stop landing at Valdez Pioneer (PAVD) when we'll pick up some Geologists from the DGGS. From here the Survey Flight begins with a trip North to Sheep Mountain (PASP) with the experts taking photos and looking down on the Glacier surrounding Mt Einstein and Mt Witherspoon. From Sheep Mountain the Geophysical experts on board have been tasked with checking the condition of the rock face of the valley through which the Matanuska River Flows. This will involve some low level flying so single file through here. At the end of the valley via King Ranch (AK59) and Wolf Lake (4AK6) we set course to Stevens Anchorage International (PACN) where the mission ends.
