June 26th marks the 75th anniversary of the start of the Berlin Airlift. This year we follow the route flown by the Sunderland flying boats of the RAF. The trip starts in Hamburg, at Finkenwerder Airport, the site of the old Blohm und Voss works on the Elbe river, and follows the river to within 50 miles of Berlin. From there we fly to the NDB in Frohnau and make a right turn to land on the Havel next to RAF Gatow. Unloading will take place at the north end of Schwanen island.
We don't have Sunderlands, so we'll take PBY Catalinas, an aircraft that also played a part in the airlift. After unloading, the Sunderlands would go back the way they came; since we're flying amphibians, we'll take the westbound corridor out of the city to land at Braunschweig.
Flight altitudes: 5,000 feet and above, in 500-foot increments.
