Apparently rag is a group of horses... You learn something new every day
Any way here's my group of ponies depicting P-51Ds as they appeared in the Memphis Belle movie. A very early WIP with plenty left to do. Please excuse the jaggie laptop pics my poor only laptop only has an Intel HD graphics adaptor and struggles with 2048 let alone 4096 textures There was of course a 4th P-51D used in the film but that had no nose art so I may do it at the end.
First off Ding Hao!
Miss L.
Cisco - Missing its nose art at the moment.

Thanks Ebo, not 100% set on the colour at the moment, it may still get some tweaking. Going for this colour:

Looking good, the colour will be a olive drab type though so you are looking for similar to how the B-17's where themselves painted.
cheers,
Lewis

If you neex a valuable source gof repainting especially RGB values fir various armed forces head over to Simmerspaintshop.com. if you don't already know about it. There you will find the correct valuey for the olive drab and the blue fof the belly. Paint picker and photos isng reliable enough for proper colour matching.

Matt, already looking much better, but a bit too brown compared to the picture you posted.
But nothing wrong with artistic licence

No, you are not. I was looking at your second image which is more green. The first image does definitely got brown in it. Have you checked the USAF table of paints they used in simmerspaintshop. that might give you some indication what the correct brown values should be.matt_smith wrote:I must be going colour blind lol.ebo wrote:Matt, already looking much better, but a bit too brown compared to the picture you posted.

Re: WIP Rag of ponies
I'd recommend as ebo mentioned simmerspaintshop and grabbing some colour swatches, that way you can get very close to the exact shade used. Also worth bookmarking simmerspaintshop as a very useful site for repainters.
thanks,
Lewis

Re: WIP Rag of ponies
I have a feeling they weren't painted a correct colour(s) at the time they were painted for the film, more the nearest they could find. I guess it fits quite well in with no 2 aircraft painted OD had the same shade of OD, add into that weathering a different rates it could be any brown/green colourebo wrote:No, you are not. Been using their site for quote some time though I found some of their colours some what off when compared to paint swatches from IPMS Stockholm colour book.Lewis - A2A wrote:I'd recommend as ebo mentioned simmerspaintshop and grabbing some colour swatches, that way you can get very close to the exact shade used. Re: WIP Rag of ponies
Matching colors well to modern photos is hard enough, let alone trying to do so using vintage film, which can, and usually does, have a bias/tint towards one color or another (red/blue/green). The specific shades of OD and Neutral Gray paint may have been very close as that used on the old "Moose/Candyman" paint scheme that the restored "Ferocious Frankie" had throughout the 80's/90's.
Here are some more photos - note how the olive drab appears different in different film:

Re: WIP Rag of ponies
The scary part about all this is that the early 90's just got called vintage, stop stealing my youth, I'm not ready to grow up yet! Cue Peter Pan impression!

Well, songs I grew up on are now on easy listening stations (Stairway to heaven) so I'd take vintage over elevator music lol
