Weathering?

I'm doing a few mods to the panel of my Cherokee and I'm seeking some advice. I don't want to do much, just give it that "slightly used" look. I thought I'd do the following;

1. A bit of wear on the yokes, where the hands grasp the frame in normal flight. I'm not sure what colour to paint as the yokes are black, what colour would show through after a bit of wear?
2. Some wear around the main knobs, such as around the altimeter adjustment or heading bug knob.
3. Just a whisker of fading on the panel in between the gauges

Would you guys mind sharing a few "trade secrets" with me? I am mainly interested in things like brush types and colours used, maybe opacity etc.
