Hop from Coventry, England to Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany

Post by Paughco »

We ended up in Coventry (EGBE) on our last MP flight. Our next flight is a race through a bunch of mountain passes from Oberpfaffenhofen (EDMO), Germany to Lido (LIPV), near Venice, Italy. I had to get my P-51 from Coventry to Oberpfaffenhofen, a distance of 554 nm. I planned to fly it at 31,500 feet, and calculated a flight time of 2 hours and 12 minutes. Figuring a fuel consumption rate of 60 gal per hour, I'd burn about 132 gallons. I decided to top up the wing tanks and the fuselage tank for this flight. Takeoff went relatively smoothly; that is to say that I had almost complete control of the airplane throughout the takeoff. I was too busy to take pictures during the takeoff.

I got her nose pointed in the right direction and started climbing:

I love this Civilian Mustang! Note that I've got the autopilot in heading mode, with the pitch set for a 1,500 fpm climb:

Here we are going "feet wet," getting ready to cross the English Channel:

We're at altitude, pulling a contrail:

The landing was actually a squeaker (almost a greaser)! Feeding the pony:

This airplane is truly the Cadillac of the Skies.
