Taking off with the wind on your tail

Post by Dominique »

Maybe Dudley has an answer to that.

Is there anything to know when you have to take off with the wind pushing your behind ? Typical of some small strips in New Britain that I'm flying now, you land one way, take off the other way. BTW, Pacific Islands Simulation scenery is a blast to fly the P40 in.

Even a small tailwind can substantially increase your takeoff roll. Ground speed will be higher for the indicated airspeed at rotation. The climb at Vy and Vx will be flatter.
Density altitude will have an effect as well.
Going into and out of any one way runway airports can be dangerous if the wind is on your tail.

Thanks ! For these strips you don't have much choice anyway due to terrain, except leaving on a boat :)
