Friday April 22nd. Vuelta a España - Leg 4

Post by ianfisher 101 »

This leg takes us from the rolling countryside of the North West to the central plains. This region features some of the countries most important city's. Our destination is Madrid, capital city of Spain, and situated in the very heart of the country. It is one of the great storehouses of European art, with the famous Prado museum being now joined bymadrid two galleries of modern art, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza. Although much of modern Madrid is functional and uninspiring, the town's centre is a pleasant area of old streets and quirky buildings. Madrid's nightlife is world famous, with a multitude of bars, clubs and restaurants starting late in the evening and staying open pretty much till dawn. Other sights of note in the centre are the Palacio Real, the gardens of El Retiro and the beautiful arcades of Plaza Mayor. Also in this region is Badajoz, crowned by the ruins of a Moorish castle, it has the powerfully armed fort of San Cristobal, and even its cathedral resembles a fortress, with massive walls. Cacercs is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Leon a city on the Way of St. James that has a vast cultural, historical and architectural heritage. Merida has well-preserved Roman ruins are is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Also holding that title is Toledo, a historic city sitting majestically above the Tagus River. Also nearby is Salamanca, its historic centre has many Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque monuments, Zamora with it's highest concentration of Romanesque art and architecture in Europe.

Central Spain has a very different climate than the coastal areas. Unlike the coasts, which have a typical Mediterranean climate, the inland areas have a continental climate. The summers are very hot, regularly exceeding 35 º C. By contrast, there are very low temperatures in winter. The locals use an old Castillian saying to describe their climate as "nine months of winter and three months of hell". The winters are often accompanied by heavy snowfall. Although it rarely rains during summer, there is often heavy rainfall in spring and autumn. The annual rainfall exceeds 500mm.
