Sunday March 27th. The worlds best driving (flying) road

For this weeks adventure we're in Romania to fly over one of the worlds best roads. It's called the Transfagarasan Highway and you might recognize this as the road Jeremy Clarkson said to be "The world's best road" in one Top Gear episode, dropping the fabulous Stelvio Pass from first to second place.

The road, that was built as a strategic military route, has 90 km of twists and turns and steep drops and climbs. It climbs up to 2,034 metres altitude and is the second highest paved road in Romania after Transalpina, it is the journey of discovery through exotic Romania that makes Transfagarasan one of the best driving roads in the world. It is a masterpiece to look at. The key to enjoying Transfagarasan is getting there the right time of the year, and also right time of the day. In summers it certainly can get crowded with tourist traffic but if you arrive before sunrise or do not mind driving it when the sun is starting to set, you should still be able to get some one on one time with the road. Otherwise head there as soon as the road opens in June and the landscapes are green, or alternatively late in the season before it closes. October is still a good time to go with beautiful autumn coloured landscapes, but even November might be possible if the weather conditions allow.

As an added bonus, and why not as were so close we'll be visiting the famous Bram Castle. Bram Stoker’s character, Dracula, is a Transylvanian Count with a castle located high above a valley perched on a rock with a flowing river below in the Principality of Transylvania.
This character is often confused with Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler), sometimes known as Vlad Dracul, who was a Walachian Prince with a castle, now in ruins, located in the Principality of Wallachia. Because Bran Castle is the only castle in all of Transylvania that actually fits Bram Stoker’s description of Dracula’s Castle, it is known throughout the world as Dracula’s Castle. Bram Stoker never visited Romania. He depicted the imaginary Dracula’s castle based upon a description of Bran Castle that was available to him in turn-of-the-century Britain. Dracula – as he is perceived today – is a fictitious character whose name derives from the appellation given to Vlad Tepes, the ruler of Wallachia from 1456-1462 and 1476, and who, for largely political reasons, was depicted by some historians of that time as a blood-thirsty ruthless despot. Visitors to Bran Castle should make the distinction between the historic reality of Bran and the character of the Count in Bram Stoker’s novel. Dracula exists in the imagination.

We start from Transilvania Targu LRTM before flying west to the edge of the Parcual Natutal Apuseni, then South and East to Sibiu and the start of theTransfagarasan Highway at it's Northern end. We then fly along the road before transiting accross to the E574 and up to the Castle. After that it's South once again through the Parcul Natural Bucegi and to our desination at Henri Coanda LROP.

Misfits

After further discussions we have decided to keep the Friday and Sunday Sortie start times at 1900z for the summer and NOT to revert to 1800z as in previous years.
