Friday 3-Dec-21 Get Your Kicks on Route 66!

Post by Paughco »

Fellow Misfits: For the next few Fridays we'll be flying from Chicago to L.A. over Route 66. What's left of it, that is.

U.S. Route 66 or U.S. Highway 66 (US 66 or Route 66), also known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways in the U.S. Highway System. US 66 was established on November 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year.[4] The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in the United States, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before terminating in Santa Monica in Los Angeles County, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km).[5] It was recognized in popular culture by both the hit song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" and the Route 66 television series, which aired on CBS from 1960 to 1964. In John Steinbeck's classic American novel, The Grapes of Wrath (1939), the road "Highway 66" symbolized escape and loss.

Here's a link to a recent version of the hit song to get your juices flowing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-N0YZkZ1gs. My plan is for us to stop at every significant city or town listed in the song. Here's the original song, just in case that last one went too fast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLUYf6cekMA.

The mission for this coming Friday is to take off from Schaumburg Regional (06C) and fly to St. Louis International (KSTL). Our flight takes us over several "must see" waypoints, that if we were driving cars or riding motorcycles, we'd have to stop and check 'em out. But since we'll be flying in our airplanes, we'll just orbit around them and see if we can pick 'em out from the air.

Hey - what's the worst that can happen?

Our first flight will take about 1 hr 42 minutes in a Piper Comanche, according to LNV, but we should add in a few minutes for orbiting over waypoints, flying under bridges, etc. Preferred aircraft for this flight is a Comanche or a Bonanza, but feel free to run what 'cha brung.

Meet at: 1830z for a 1900z departure.

Meet on: Digital Theme Park on JoinFS.

Comms through A2A Discord channel.

Start at: Schaumburg Regional (06C).

Local takeoff time: 1100.

Weather: historic.

Here's the flight plan for Rt66-01 on SkyVector: https://skyvector.com/?ll=40.3883968674 ... 11W%20KSTL

I'll post the LNV flight plan on Discord.
