The Yanks are Coming! - Leg 03 - Friday, 23-Jul-21

Post by Paughco »

Fellow Misfits: Our next mission on Friday, July 23rd will be the longest, and also the most dangerous of our eight-leg route to England, especially during the landing phase. We're currently in Goose Bay (CYYR), waiting for the weather to improve for our flight across the Labrador Sea to Narsaruaq Airport in Greenland (BGBW), also known as Bluie West One (BW-1) back in the day. Word is we have to leave by Friday, no matter what. Our navigators have been stressing over the route, which will be the longest cross-water flight they have yet attempted. One of the navigators, while wondering around the mess hall, talked to some older crew members who were flying C-47s over to Europe. This guy named Ernie told him that you need to fly at whatever altitude gives you the best winds, so you don't run out of gas out there over the North Atlantic. Also, we'll need to pick the correct fiord that leads to Narsaruaq. There are several to choose from, and the wrong fiords all end with no airport and no way to turn around. If you see a wrecked ship you'll know you're on the right one. Another clue is to home in on the Simiutaq NDB (279 kHz), then fly toward the Nasaq NDB (404 kHz).

Here's the official briefing on Narsarsuaq airport: Narsarsuaq airport (BGBW) is perhaps the most common stopover in Greenland for North Atlantic ferry flights. Rwy 07/25 is 6,004 feet and there are NDB approaches with lowest minimums down to 1,500 feet. There is no tower control, but the AFIS / flight information folks are really good. For weather and flight planning you go inside the terminal. Jet and avgas are normally available. Nars'q can be fairly challenging with winds and weather. The runway is surrounded by rising terrain and there can be strong turbulence in the fjord, especially with high winds.

Here is a video on landing at Narsaruaq: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbbpjdGc9Jk.

Here is a link to a report from By Howard Traeder, Pilot, 601st Squadron, 398th Bomb Group: https://www.398th.org/History/Veterans/ ... eWest.html.

Here's the Skyvector representation of our third flight, designated TYAC 03: https://skyvector.com/?ll=60.8880341060 ... 30W%20BGBW.

Preferred aircraft is the Boeing B-17. Bring a long-legged warbird if you don't have a 'Fort. Block fuel for the B-17G for this mission will be 1,036 gallons. The flight will take about 3 hr 46 min.

Meet at: 1730z for a 1800z departure.

Meet on: Digital Theme Park on JoinFS.

Comms through A2A Discord channel.

Local takeoff time: 1100.

Weather: historic, set for 1100, July 23, 2021.

I'll post the LNV flight plan on Discord. Hey - what's the worst that can happen?

I wish I could make this flight with you. You got me excited about it so I flew it in MSFS in the TBM 930. Weather was almost an IFR approach but it opened up enough at 1500 to get a visual. The Garmin 3000 really helped on the approach. I had heavy rains, ominous black clouds and variable gusty winds. So exciting 8) . MSFS does not have Narsarsuaq so I downloaded the freeware https://flightsim.to/file/734/bgbw-narsarsuaq-greenland which is quite nice.

Good luck fellas

I would love to make the flight. And by the way, we are in a day when having modern navigational aids is the standard. Not having them in your aircraft is not being a prudent pilot.
