This week we leave "the Paris of Asia" and round the southwestern end of Lake Baikal on our way into the Yablonoy Mountains. By volume, Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake in the world, containing 22% of the world's fresh surface water. It is also the world's deepest lake, at 5,387 feet, (1,642 metres).

We're taking Spitfires this week, so we'll be stopping to refuel at Ulan-Ude, home to the huge Lenin Head monument, before continuing to Chita, the birthplace of Aleksandra Samusenko (1922–1945), a Soviet tank captain and the sole female tankman in 1st Guards Tank Army in the Great Patriotic War. Chita is also the birthplace of Nataliya Kuznetsova (born 1991), the Russian professional female bodybuilder who holds the world armlifting, bench press, and deadlift titles.
