Sunday, January 24 MP Flight - With the Desert Rats and the Afrika Korps

Post by ratty »

Tour the Western Desert and Qattara Depression on a 400-mile trip visiting famous sites of the WW2 North African campaign (though really it's just a bit of sea, a couple of low hills, and a lot of sand).

We start in Alexandria and fly west past El Alamein, Mersa Matruh and Sidi Barrani, finishing at Tobruk.

Aircraft? P-40s, of course, but a fighter escort of Spitfires wouldn't go amiss.

Meet at: 1845 GMT for a 1900 departure.

Meet on: Digital Theme Park on JoinFS.

Comms through A2A Discord channel.

Start at: Alexandria Airport, HEAX.

Local takeoff time: 1500.

Weather: Real, historic.

Freeware Tobruk airport scenery: library.avsim.net/esearch.php?DLID=208283

Hey Ratty,
I can't fly with you guys due to timezones, but here is a link to a paint Bladrunner did for me.
It is a paint from Wing Commander Brian Eaton, RAAF 3 Squadron, who went on to become Australian Vice Air Marshall. He flew the desert in 1943 and Malta, then up to Italy.
He was shot down 3 times in his first 10 days in Malta but managed to survive.
Brian was a distant relative of mine.

Got it. Our usual 1800/1900 GMT times favour the US and western Europe. Occasionally we get Corsair from NZ, but for you it's the middle of the night. The latest Navigraph survey shows a lot of simmers in Australia, so we should come up with another session at a time that works for your part of the world.
