Sunday November 1st - Low Level High Speed Training Sortie

Post by ianfisher 101 »

For this weeks MP flight we return to our favourite A2A war birds for a test of precision and skill.

The sortie will start from RAF Valley on Anglesey which is home to No 4 Flying Training School, responsible for training the UK's next generation of world-class fighter pilots. Aircrew are also trained at RAF Valley for mountain and maritime operations throughout the world. RAF Valley is also home to the Mountain Rescue Service, the military's only high readiness, all weather search and rescue, aircraft post-crash management asset. From here we fly south into North Wales for a circuit of the world famous Mach Loop. Also known as the Machynlleth Loop it's a series of valleys in west-central Wales, notable for their use as low-level training areas for fast jet and propeller-driven aircraft. The system of valleys lies 13 km east of Barmouth between the towns of Dolgellau to the north and Machynlleth to the south, from the latter of which it takes its name. The training area is within the Low Flying Area (LFA) LFA7, which covers most of Wales. Aircraft seen in the area include Royal Air Force Airbus A400M, Typhoon, Hawk jets and C-130J and Short Tucano as well as U.S. Air Force F-15C Eagles and F-15E Strike Eagles which are based at RAF Lakenheath and MC-130 and V-22 Osprey from RAF Mildenhall. Aircraft from other European nations have been sighted training in the Mach Loop, such as Belgian F-16 Stingers. Today spotters will have the chance to see the famous Misfit Squadron in action as the squadrons intrepid pilots pit their wits against the fearsome course.

Once we exit the loop we fly north into the Snowdonia National Park as we transit to our next low level area. After leaving the Welsh coast we'll have 60 miles of open sea to cross where the squadron will practice their close formation flying. Hopefully Curt, Dillan and Corsair will be once again be showing us how it's done with the rest of the squadron doing the best we can.

The second part of todays sortie is (based on a recent T-6 flight done by Rob at Dreamsofwings) over and through the lakes and valleys of the Lake District. Also known as the Lakes or Lakeland, it's a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it's famous for its lakes, forests and mountains, and its associations with William Wordsworth and other Lake Poets and also with Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin. The Lake District National Park was established in 1951 and covers an area of 2,362 square kilometres. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. The Lake District is located completely within Cumbria, and all the land in England higher than 3,000 feet above sea level lies within the National Park, including Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. It also contains the deepest and largest natural lakes in England, Wast Water and Windermere respectively. Towards the end of todays sortie one of the lakes we'll be flying over will be Coniston Water which was the scene of many attempts to break the world water speed record. On 19 August 1939 Sir Malcolm Campbell set the record at 141.74 miles per hour in Blue Bird K4. Between 1956 and 1959 Sir Malcolm's son Donald Campbell set four successive records on the lake in Bluebird K7, a hydroplane. Then on 4 January 1967, while attempting to retain the record he achieved a top speed of over 320 miles per hour but on the return leg he lost control of Bluebird, which somersaulted and crashed, sinking rapidly; Campbell was killed. The remains of Bluebird were recovered from the water in 2001 and Campbell's body was recovered later in the same year.

The sortie will end with a short flight across to Warton aerodrome, the home of BAE Systems, the successor of Vickers-Armstrong who in turn succeeded Supermarine, the original designer of the Spitfires we're flying today. (Other vintage fighters are also available). The flight is 383nm and will take a little under Two hours. For those in the Spitfire you'll need full tanks and be leaned out with course prop settings for the cruise portion of the flight.
