Sunday 2nd August 2020 - Adriatic Coast

Post by ianfisher 101 »

This flight will take us from Croatia in the North to Greece in the South via Montenegro and Albania. It's 320 miles from start to finish and should take a little over 2 hours. The aircraft we'll be flying today will be the A2A PA24 Comanche.

The starting point will be Split. It's the second-largest city of Croatia and the largest city of the region of Dalmatia, with about 250,000 people living in its urban area. It lies on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea and is spread over a central peninsula and its surroundings. An intraregional transport hub and popular tourist destination, the city is linked to the Adriatic islands and the Apennine peninsula.

After take off we fly South to the southern Croatian city of Dubrovnik. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea, a seaport and the centre of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Its total population is 42,615 (census 2011). In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites. The history of the city probably dates back to the 7th century, when the town known as Ragusa was founded by refugees from Epidaurum.

After a touch and go we move down the coast just a short hop to Tivat which is a coastal town in southwest Montenegro, located in the Bay of Kotor. As of 2011, its population was 14,031. Tivat is the centre of Tivat Municipality, which is the smallest municipality by area in Montenegro. The town is located in the central part of the Bay of Kotor, south of mount Vrmac. The municipality lies mostly south of the town, and has an exit to open sea at the tourist location Pržno inlet near Radovići village. Its central part, where Tivat Airport is located, lies in fertile Grbalj valley.

After a stop for coffee or fuel we continue southbound and into our Third Country. Tirana is the capital and largest city by area and population of the Republic of Albania. It's located in the center of Albania enclosed by mountains and hills with Mount Dajt elevating on the east and a slight valley on the northwest overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the distance. Due to its location at the Plain of Tirana and the close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, the city is particularly influenced by a Mediterranean seasonal climate. It is among the wettest and sunniest cities in Europe, with 2,544 hours of sun per year. Tirana flourished as a city in 1614 but the region that today corresponds to the city's territory has been continuously inhabited since the Iron Age.

After another touch and go we continue South to our final destination and our Fourth Country. Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It's the second largest of the Ionian Islands and, including its small satellite islands, forms the margin of the northwestern frontier of Greece. The principal city of the island is also named Corfu and is home to the Ionian University. The island is bound up with the history of Greece from the beginnings of Greek mythology. Its history is full of battles and conquests. Corfu is the origin of the Ionian Academy, the first university of the modern Greek state, and the Nobile Teatro di San Giacomo di Corfù, the first Greek theatre and opera house of modern Greece. In 2007, the city's old town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The island is a very popular tourist destination and it's here we end our flight today. I hope you've brought your sun cream and swimming trunks.

Hi Ian, hi fellow simmers,

other than with our Norway tour this Friday, in this southern region at 2000z, which will be our planned arrival time at our destination airport, it already will be dark night at LGKR.
Therefore I propose to start at 1800z realtime, but set the sim time to 1600z. This will give as "photo light" for nice snapshots when arriving at our destination airport about two hours later.

Looking forward participating in this nice tour.

Sunset in Corfu tonight is at 20.52 so let’s set 1700 local time as our wheels up time. I’m expecting 2 hrs 30 mins flight time so we should be down and finished by 1930, still plenty of light but Should be getting some colour in the sky. See you all later. Ian.
