May 10th MP Flight - Arsenal Of Democracy

Post by ianfisher 101 »

This weekend the world celebrates the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day - May 8th, 1945. North American warbird operators had planned an encore performance of the 2015 Arsenal of Democracy flyover that was to have over 100 World War II aircraft flying down the United States Capitol Mall in arguably the worlds most restricted airspace. Unfortunately due to the current virus outbreak, the actual even has been postponed until September 2020 which presents the perfect opportunity to fly it ourselves. We meet at Culpeper, VA (KCJR) and start off with some formation practice and sightseeing around Shenandoah National Park before making our way to the Potomac River and the National Mall. The plan is to continue south along the river before recovering at Dulles Intl (KIAD) to park at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum (Udvar-Hazy Center) at the south end of the field where a fundraising celebratory gala will be held to honor the successful event and several WWII veterans that will be present.

A couple of observations from Ian

Firstly there are a number of static GA aircraft embedded into the secenry at KCJR so be prepared to do some repositioning to get a free space.
Secondly the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum is modeled in KIAD. Access for aircraft is from the end of taxiway Juliet, however there is a fence that devides the airfield from the museum so just pretend it's not there and taxi through it. No harn will come to you, your T-6 or the fence. Parking is on the grass in front of the museum. See attached pics for details. Should be a good one, have fun.
