Curtiss P-40Cs of the 33rd Fighter Squadron, flying off the carrier USS Wasp, arrived at their new base at Reykjavik, Iceland on August 6, 1942. Eight days later, one of their pilots achieved the first confirmed victory by USAAF aircraft over a German aircraft in World War II.*
This week, we're taking A2A's 33rd Fighter Squadron P-40s on a familiarisation flight over the island. Mustangs, Spitfires, et al. are welcome to join.

* Second Lieutenant Joseph D. Shaffer intercepted a Focke-Wulf Fw 200C-3 maritime patrol aircraft that overflew the base. His attack damaged one of the bomber's engines. It was finished off by two P-38s of the 27th Fighter Squadron, which were making a refuelling stop on their way to England. One of them has the distinction of being the first Army Air Forces aircraft to be hit by German gunfire during World War II.
