Friday 1st October - Express d'Orient - Leg Four

Post by ianfisher 101 »

So to our final leg of the current A2A Friday Tour. The original route, which first ran on 4 October 1883, was from Paris, Gare de l'Est, to Giurgiu in Romania via Munich and Vienna. At Giurgiu, passengers were ferried across the Danube to Ruse, Bulgaria, to pick up another train to Varna. They then completed their journey to Constantinople by ferry. On 1 June 1889, the first direct train to Constantinople left Paris (Gare de l'Est). Istanbul, known as Constantinople until circa 1930 in English, remained its easternmost stop until 19 May 1977. The eastern terminus was the Sirkeci Terminal by the Golden Horn. Ferry service from piers next to the terminal would take passengers across the Bosphorus to Haydarpaşa Terminal, the terminus of the Asian lines of the Ottoman Railways. 348nm and a little over 2 hours flight time in a Bonanza.

LTFM 'new Istanbul Airport' not found in Little Navmap. I terminated my route at LTBA for the time being. I suspect that that airport may not have existed back in the time frame of the original Orient Express run.

Now to rename 77 waypoints designated by Lat/Lon.

Hi Gypsy

The reason your copy of LNM does not have LTFM is that your Sim doesn't. LNM gets its data from the sim you have on your desktop. If it's not in your version of FSX then it won't be in LNM. For those with a more up to date database it will be there. It opend to traffic on 29 October 2018.

Yes you are quite right in saying you suspect it did not exist back when the original Orient Express ran, especialy if you think about the fact that it wasn't until 20 years later in 1903 that the Wright Brothers achieved sustained controlled powered flight at Kitty Hawk.

LTBA is a good alternative. It's been there since 1911.

See you on the flight.

Guys: I won't be present on our Friday flight, because I have to attend a Safety Meeting of the Hog Ridin' Fools. We're going to meet at the Sultan Bakery. There's a chance I might get back home in time to join you guys, but I can't say for sure. I already flew the flight, and I believe that you will enjoy it.

Seeya on Sunday!
