G-KURK, the new repaint incoming (+ trip over Africa)

Post by YoYo »

I decided to do the skin for Cub "Liberty Girl II" of the one of the most eccentric and crazy pilots (I suppose) of Piper Cub ever: Maurice Kirk . Its not only skin, its a interesting story of the man - flying vet with big love to Cub (he had few).
A few quotes from his a little ;) crazy life:

"In the spring of 2001, Maurice Kirk threw a monkey wrench into a re-enactment of the great London-Sydney Air Race, first flown in 1919 and again in 1969. But nobody expected the self-proclaimed "flying vet" to enter the race with a 60-horsepower Piper Cub that came from the factory with a 12-gallon fuel tank."
"A 72-year-old British pilot, who went missing for a second time while attempting to fly a 1940s plane the length of Africa, has been found. Maurice Kirk, who lives in Bristol, was part of a vintage air rally flying from Crete to Cape Town. He was reported missing for the second time on Friday after taking off from Ethiopia. His plane suffered engine failure but he managed to land safely, rally organisers said..."
"Pensioner Mr Kirk first went missing on a three-hour leg of the cross-African flight from southern Sudan into western Ethiopia earlier this week. He was later found and reunited with rest of the competitors at the airport in Gambela, Ethiopia."
"Flying Vet held after dropping in at Bush ranch: I realised that I was right near the ranch of George W and I thought I could knock on his door and leave a note to thank him for the US Coastguard saving my life".
"All his life, it seems, Maurice broke the rules and trusted that his wits would see him through. He was repeatedly rebuked and occasionally arrested for landing on golf courses, flying under bridges, making a citizen's arrest of a court officer, and other offenses against the public order, including -- finally and fatally -- the purchase of a Lewis machine gun from the First World War. First he lost his veterinarian's license, then he lost his freedom."

Hard to tell how many he had "hard" landings and crashes on his Cubs but he visited on this Piper a lot of countries on long distance also, you can read this article about his life - https://www.pipercubforum.com/sydney.htm - Around the world in a Piper Cub (more or less).
His last trip was Africa (not finished) so ... maybe You want to finish it with new ORBX Open Landclass for Africa on A2A Cub? :D Why not! Just idea!

Here you can find a little more about this planned trip: http://www.vintageairrally.com/9-event/210-pastevents (or http://www.pilotspost.co.za/arn0001122 ).
/and about his trrip https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-new ... ng-9321509 /.

Image Image

A little about skin for P3Dv4.4+ : it will not be repaint 1:1, his (the last and present Cub) its G-KURK but its L-4 Grasshooper but I wanted to celebrate these interesting adventures of Maurice Kirk. I decided to do new "silver" repaint with all techniques that the current A2A's Cub allows - so PBR, shadowing, material mapping (as I can), new weathering (like Leak, dirty, scratches, worn tires, bugs ;>, trash ect.), just for fun but I prefer this kind of outside and inside textures.

Here is preview only (but soon, this week I think).

Great stuff YoYo - this looks very original. Did you steal that throttle plate off a mobility scooter? :)

This is next idea for new release - Orbx Africa Landclass - for new adventure on A2A Cub. I started to do recreation of 2016 Vintage Air Rally "Crete2Cape" - what it was in 2016.

Image
Following in the footsteps of the pioneering flights in the 1920s – we connected some of the most beautiful and evocative points in Africa. We flew low along the Nile from Cairo to Khartoum, past the highlands of Ethiopia before the plains of Kenya and the home of African aviation in Nairobi. Then we went off again past Kilimanjaro into the Serengeti – and on to the spice island of Zanzibar. After a short pause we enjoyed the Indian ocean, we continued, crossed Zambia to Victoria Falls, before we continuied to Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. Our final days took us across Botswana and into stunning South Africa – to the Cape, journey’s end.
Image

Few days ago (2.04.2020) I started this Air African Rally. Now after me its 12h of real time of flying, rules:
- solo flight,
- real time (so no any compressed option),
- real weather (Active Sky)
- compass and clock only,
- VR flight,
- no A2A 2D map ;>.
- every flight can be saved after parking the Cub,
- youtube music from this country where I am ;).

Now Im near to end of border of Egipt. The journey continues ... (the goal is to do whole Maurice Kirk trip or... maybe the whole race 8) ).

Below are some photos from a trip over Africa (with new LC for sure) and Mr.Kirk G-KURK plane:
