Humphrey's Peak is a great navaid that I've used on many flights in the area. :)

I did notice that my OAT was higher than what ground stations were reporting in the area. Gotta love 122.00 from Active Sky.

On a recent flight I passed through some clouds I couldn't see and ended up with some carb icing. I hope you checked for that. :)

I was wondering initially about your use of the term "IFR" but realized it was "I Follow Roads". :D

Has anyone ever been complimented by Heidi on a landing?

Currently in Barstow-Daggett with one more leg to fly to complete the Long Flight. That looks like about 90 minutes.

Maps to show where I've been flying the Cub, as described in previous posts.

The first one is the Long Flight from Los Angeles to New Jersey to Trinidad to Florida to my home airport in Bonham TX and back to Los Angeles.

The second one is the Alaska flight that started in Sparrevohn in the upper left, through the Merrill Pass to Ruth Glacier on Denali, out to Dutch Harbor and back to Sparrevohn.

All at an average speed of 62 knots! :D

Hook-The scenery I'm using right now is the Megascenery Earth V3. It is a photo-realistic set, using 2017 imagery. I have Orbx (see the first couple of pages of my transcontinental route out of Sedona, AZ for Orbx scenery) (https://mutleyshangar.com/forum/index.p ... /#comments). I'm still playing with some of the settings, so I'm not sure that I have the Megascenery Earth fully optimized yet. I prefer the Megascenery Earth for the Cub over Orbix, because 1) For VFR navigation purposes, the Megascenery Earth is absolutely accurate, whereas Orbix is generally accurate;, 2) for non-mountainous areas, Megascenery Earth looks better. I'm not sure yet about whether it looks better in complex terrain, such as the area around Winslow, AZ of White Sands, NM. The other reason I'm using the Megascenery Earth for this flight, is that I am tying to showcase some of the natural beauty of the USA. I'm including some kmz/Google Earth files of my flights over at the "Mutley's Hanger" website, so people who are interested can follow along in Google Earth and explore the US with me. Becasue of my goal of highlighting the natural beauty of the US, I wanted to use photo-realistic scenery as much as possible.

Blimey those maps really do add to your posts Hook. Sure as hell help to visualise the magnitude of the adventure, which would be fun in a normal GA let alone the little potentially flying backwards in a strong wind Cub! :lol: :lol: Well done, that's some amazing hand flying distance you've done there, WOW! 8) 8)

Start in California and fly west. I believe that final leg from New York to California was the longest continuous flight I've made in one sitting, 12 hours. I only used the autopilot a few times in all that, not more than an hour total. That's hand flying almost all the time. And dead reckoning when there aren't any VORs around. :) No GPS and very limited use of the Shift-5 map.

The first leg of the flight from California to Hawaii, this is the entirety of my flight plan:

Connie
San Francisco to Honolulu
237°, 2° south every hour

Actually, that's a pretty typical flight plan when I'm doing a great circle route over the ocean.

London to St Johns
280°, 2.5° south every hour

As for "the little potentially flying backwards in a strong wind Cub!" I've had several times when SkyVector announced "Headwind higher than true airspeed" in the Aleutians and even got that when I made the Alaska tour map for this forum. :)

And, just to prove it could be done, a DC-3 Pacific crossing in the Manfred Jahn C-47.

That short flight in the Aleutians was when I landed at the wrong airport due to extremely bad visibility and similar island shapes and some heading miscalculation. By the time I realized I was at Atka instead if Adak I didn't care. I just couldn't refuel there because there was no fuel pump. :)

The C-47 doesn't even have an autopilot. Also, note that all flights were with real world weather. For all flights, winds aloft info from windy.com which did not always match Active Sky.

PADK PMDY
175° PMDY 1420 nm 10:30 Steer 180° (should be 180° to halfway then 175°)

Guys! Gimme a break here! The Cub is a puddle jumper! Right now the Snoqualmie Valley is pretty flooded. But we've been blessed with a pretty decent Sunday afternoon. I got my Cub out of her hangar at (ORBX) W16, which is First Air in Monroe, Washington. Checked her out, then fired her up. The obvious place to go is over the Harvey Field (S43) for a burger at the Buzz-In. Started out with an approach to 15R, but based on traffic calls, it appeared that the happening thing was 33L. Cool. Minor adjustment made, I survived the landing (arrival) and taxied back toward the transient parking area. Great burger. Greasier than Five Guys, but the fries were just OK. This young lady was looking for a ride to Monroe. Hmm. I told her that I'd be heading back to the Monroe Airport soon. Burger finished, I checked out my little J-3 and got ready to go. There she was. I helped her into the front seat, then carefully started the engine. We taxied back out and flew east to First Air. The approach to Rwy 25 was a little fast and a little long. She said "Oof" as we touched down, closer to the end of the runway than I'd really prefer. I taxied back to the "terminal" area, and let her out. Then I did a couple more touch and goes - more practice needed. Purity of Essence still intact.

So... passed 1,000 hours in P3DV4. The Cub now has more hours than any other single and any other A2A aircraft (in V4 at least - the Strat topped 100 in FSX, and combined, others are over 100). It has equaled the Comanche and T-6 in the number of flights. Only one other aircraft has more flights - a record that will not stand for much longer. Only the T-6 has more landings (a term I use loosely when it comes to her), still by quite some margin.

I have finally reach Cali. I'm parked up high at Big Bear. Landing was not pretty... should have gone around. Heidi was not impressed. Agua Dulce next. Then it's whether I go up the coast or up the valley.

If you're having problems getting a soft landing, it might help to carry a bit of power down to the runway. Adding a little throttle as you're about to touch down (very little!) can reduce your rate of descent and soften what would otherwise be a firm landing. Experiment to see what works best for you.

If the problem is crosswinds, it just takes lots of practice. I've had success with doing a slip to keep aligned with the runway and touching down on one wheel at first. Bank a bit into the wind, use opposite rudder to keep aligned with the center line. This is very much done by feel, the kind of thing the Cub is made for.

There's nothing fundamentally wrong - I just muffed one. The AWS had one wind, the windsock had another and I should have gone around, chucked a U-turn and come back for another go.

After taking a break to fly my new Comanche, I'm back in the Cub for a while.

I updated P3Dv4.4 to P3Dv4.5 and while there are improvements I have a problem with corrupted logbooks, even a new empty one is corrupted. Oh well. I've mentioned this in another post and asked for suggestions there.

I forgot how much fun it is to fly the Cub, and how easy it is to fly. I've commented that the Comanche is like a Mercedes, solid and refined, and the Cub is like the Honda 450 motorcycle I rode for a year when I was 21. It's just a lot of fun and you feel like you're more a part of the world rather than isolated in a cockpit. It also has that motorcycle feeling of freedom that you don't get in a car or a typical GA plane.

I took the Cub down to Brown and back (KSNA-KSDM-KSNA) redoing the final flight from Flight of Passage, then flew to Las Vegas. I intentionally started late in the day on the flight to Las Vegas so I could see the improved night lighting in v4.5 and it does look nicer, richer and fuller. One oddity is that on highway 15 the traffic was on the wrong side of the road. I'll have to do a flight somewhere else to see if it's the same everywhere. I flew down the main strip in Vegas, first time I've done that at night. Some of the casinos aren't lit, for example Circus Circus, but most are. I did another flight down the strip during the day. I was surprised to see reflections of other buildings on the various glass buildings with dynamic reflections set to Ultra.

Next Cub flight will be the Grand Canyon. I haven't been there in a while.

I've just arrived in Hobby at Creswell, Or. Almost 77 hours. My Cub now holds every V4 logbook record except for total hours - most flights, most landings, most flights by a single reg, most airports visited, most flights in a row by type (which is a record that would top anything since FS2, let alone V4). And it has set them in 8 weeks...

123nm left to Sutton's - but I won't fly that direct. Probably another four stops along the way.
