antalising mode OVERRIDE
antialising setting 8X (CSAA)
antialising transparency OFF

Multi-display/mixed... SINGLE...

texture filtering neg lod CLAMP
texture filtering quality HIGH Q-TY

threaded optomization ON
triple buffering ON
vertical synch FORCE ON

The distant terrain textures are so stable and of high quality I was stunned. Screenshots won't show you this.because I can't notice any aliasing even on dark wing edge against white cloud or on control cables!

I just tested letting the application controlled ansio 16 x . The shimmering is massive! Where you got this idea from frankly mystifies me. One has to set the video card to over-ride these game settings to get ride of them.

It's no Idea of mine. It just works on my system the way I told it does and I guess it's you who is in minority.

You don't want to bet.

I say: screenshots are not suitable to assess anything which involves movement as an important part. Obvious.

I'm getting real confused now. What are MSAA and CSAA?
I would gladly pay to have someone set up everything in my NVidia control panel optimally including all the device settings. I know my machine can perform better but I just don't know how to make it do so.

It's simple:
Anti Aliasing: CSAA is superior over MSAA
CSAA works only for certain ?x settings and the table shows for which exactly (8x, 16x, 16xQ)

A little bit more details:
Anti Aliasing (AA) gives serious FPS drop when enabled. Anti Aliasing settings with CSAA will minimize the negative effect. Example: 8x (using CSAA method) Anti Aliasing setting will make as small FPS drop as 4x (NOT having CSAA, using "older" MSAA) Anti Aliasing setting and it will look better than 4x setting.

Bucic:

but where do you specify whether you are using MSAA or CSAA?
Is it simply that one or the other is employed automatically according to the chart?
What's the difference between 16x and 16xQ? which should I use?

The second one - Anti Aliasing (AA) method that will be used is determined by the AA setting (?x - 4x, 8x and so on) chosen as per the chart "Setting / Anti Aliasing method".

Without the technical mumbo jumbo behind the process (I don't get it too) - 16xQ is quality enhanced 16x mode.

Regular modes vs xQ modes performance hit explained by sillyeagle:
As you can see from jAkUps FEAR scores, 8x and 16x run at nearly the same speed as 4x, while 8xQ and 16xQ take a huge hit. http://i13.tinypic.com/2hds400.jpg
16x vs 16xQ short answer: if you still have your FPS "too high" (e.g. 100 FPS during campaign massive battles :P... actually I'm serious) go for 16xQ. Otherwise stick to 16x or 8x which are hard to distinguish already.

Note that quality difference is very hard to evaluate above CSAA enabled 8x AA setting I use. At this setting and 1280x1024 19" LCD I can't spot pixeling even on rudder control line of Spitfire against bright sky and as you may know I'm a picky bustard.

Another example why CSAA enabled AA settings should be used:
The result is that you can achieve 16X AA quality at nearly the same speed as 4X AA.

thanks to all for sharing all the details of settings, this is very useful, and beyond normal operations of the sim in action I am very interested in how far the graphics can go so these posts will be very very helpful.
