Flaps not moving

Post by mrjp990 »

Flaps are not broken, fresh airframe and engines, flaps dont move up or down, engineer says he cant crank them, and the switch does nothing. Aircraft has latest update, but I don't see the little blue update icon.

Hi.
Could you please give more info on following.
1/. What sim FSXA/P3D
2/. What operating system WIN 7/8/10
3/. is the flap issue present in flight or stationary , if in flight speed needs to be 150 mph max
4/. What errors show in the hanger , anything or nothing
5/. What addons do you have in the sim
6/. Did you leave the switch in the up or down position , instead of center OFF position , this could burn the motor out
regards Alan. 8)

Alan is on-point here. The problem can sometimes be (I presume) an Accu-sim issue. I have had issues in the past. I know I have issues in that an item is not working properly yet the crew chief reports nothing. Eventually he will report the issue and it can be repaired. This is a rare occurrence but I have had it. The one I remember was a hydraulic oil leak that required gallons of fluid each flight but the crew chief did not report on it. Flaps might be little more concerning because I could keep my flights short enough not to run out of oil.

Good luck
Roger

Hi Roger.
The issue on the B17 flaps will not be hydraulic fluid loss , becauase hydraulics only operate cowl flaps and brakes , motor burnout or flap jam or to high a speed or as happend to me in the 91st FLAK damage are most likely to be the cause .

Copy that Alan. I did not say I had a flap problem because of hydraulic loss. I was stating that sometimes Accu-Sim does not report an issue for a while. Another issue I had (besides the hydraulic leak in the B17) was in the Comanche with missing aileron parts as witnessed during my walk-around. I flew the plane another 10+ hours during 3-4 flights before the problem showed up in the hanger so that it could be repaired.

mrgp990, for P3D v4 or 5 the updater should be in the Windows Start menu under A2A Simulations. It is listed as "B-17 Check For Updates P3Dx"

So, one option is to backup then remove file < B17log.dat > from " ~Documents\A2A\FSX\B17 " and try her out. If the problem persists then put the file back in and hope it shows up in hanger soon. If the problem is gone then you're golden.
Option two is to just keep flying the old girl and hope the issue will resolve itself soon.
Option C is to look very closely in the hanger. I have to admit that sometimes with my eyes the colors of the text do not stand out and grab my attention. Old eyes and such that I have. I hate the poke-a-dot color tests that doctors give. They tell me that there are numbers and shapes in there somewhere's  . I believe it's all a lie :D

Anyways, I hope you get it sorted as she is really fun to fly.
Roger

Question 1, do you hear the flap motor whining? It's quite loud.
Question 2, have you looked from outside the aircraft at flaps. On the B-17 the flaps are under the trailing edge. The top of the trailing edge does not lower.

Case in point here. Doing the run-up on my P51 yesterday the left mag would barely run the engine. I shut down and checked the hanger but there was no report of a mag issue. Fortunately the P-51 hanger allows you to replace items under the cowl even if they are not listed in yellow or red. I replaced the left mag and went on about my flight.

Cheers

I've gotten bad mag checks in the Mustang a few times and a high power runup for 30 seconds or so has always cleared it, indicating fouled sparks plug(s) in that set...so far...just a thought...

Good point Rob. I held run-up power settings for a bit thinking it was fouled plugs but it did not clear up. Most likely I did not hold it long enough.
Thanks

I don't think runup settings are high enough power...not knowing your settings, I run it up at 2300 rpm and I can't remember what average MP that works out to (35-ish?), but in order to clean the plugs I'll run it up to 40" for 10 - 15 seconds (I've never thought to experiment to see what would be a minimum power setting and time...) and then pull it back to 2300 rpm for another try. I've never had to do that twice to clear the fault, but now I'm thinking about seeing how little increase and time will work next time it happens...

Cheers,
Rob
