360 Degree Turn with B-17
360 Degree Turn with B-17
How long should it take to make a 360 degree turn in the B-17 with a 30 degree bank and full throttle. I haven't timed one but to me it seems like a really long time.

Re: 360 Degree Turn with B-17
If I remember correctly is should take 2 minutes. Speed should not affect the time to complete a standard rate turn. I'm a armchair pilot, so I could be wrong
Kind Regards

Re: 360 Degree Turn with B-17
Yes, as Tomas says, you should be able to fly a 'standard rate' 2 minute turn in the B-17, or in other words maintain a turn rate of 3°per second, just as with most other non-pointy aeroplanes. The bank angle needed to do this will depend on your airspeed though. So, to fly a standard rate turn effectively, you'll need to maintain the appropriate bank angle for your airspeed and use the right amount of rudder input to coordinate the turn. The turn and slip indicator on the panel is designed to help with both of these tasks.

Re: 360 Degree Turn with B-17
Thanks for the come back. I had also heard that it would take two minutes. But it's a long two minutes. I am going to time one and see what I get.

Re: 360 Degree Turn with B-17
I timed a turn and this is what I got. 30 degree bank, steady altitude and speed. I used auto rudder and altitude hold. I was at full throttle and it took 4 mins and 30 sec to do a 360. Would someone else give it a go and let me know what your results are.

Re: 360 Degree Turn with B-17
Hi BigT-65.
Do not use auto rudder , it does not allow co-ordinated turns , the B17 needs a lot of rudder for given bank angle .
regards Alan.

Re: 360 Degree Turn with B-17
Also, if you're looking for someone to duplicate your test, "full throttle" is a meaningless detail. It is airspeed that is going to determine your rate of turn at a given bank angle.

I can get pretty close, sometimes 1m 49s, sometimes 2m 5s. I'll say: test passed.
Thanks Nick, I knew there was something I've forgotten from my sim PPL theoryNick - A2A wrote: ↑22 May 2021, 19:11 Yes, as Tomas says, you should be able to fly a 'standard rate' 2 minute turn in the B-17, or in other words maintain a turn rate of 3°per second, just as with most other non-pointy aeroplanes. Re: 360 Degree Turn with B-17
OK, I'll turn off the auto rudder. I just thought it would make it one less thing I would have to monitor in the turn. The air speed was about 170 mph.
Thanks for all the input on this post.
