A question for B-17 afficianados

Post by geopetlas »

Or any bomber fan.

I noticed that on some planes the mission markings, the small bomb representations painted on the fuselage, may contain mix of colors.
Can anyone tell me what the mix represents?

This has been bugging me and I can't seem to locate any info on this.

here's a link to the RAF BBMF page on their Lanc when she wore the paint of EE139: http://www.raf.mod.uk/bbmf/theaircraft/ ... ofruhr.cfm

Red bombs for raids on Berlin
Yellow for other raids
Ice cones for Italian raids

not sure about USAAF bombers though...
Kind Regards
Tomas

Hey Tomas,

Thanks for the info, Kinda makes sense to differentiate the missions flown over Germany from those flown elsewhere.

Though it should be noted the markings will be crew specific as well, there's no standardized way to do such things, so you will tend to get a great variance on the icons used.

thanks,
