By delightful coincidence, as I edit this, I'm listening to a real B-17's four Wrights as Nine-O-Nine heads out to the coast from KCRQ, over our house, on the evening launch with Colling's Foundation passengers. Some kind of lovely poetry in that.

Can't decide if the best music is created by their P-51C or their B-25, the B-17 and B-24 by contrast a mellow contrabass drone. I'm leaning toward the B-25 for sheer volume and the throaty roar, not to mention the fact that my Dad flew them in training before going to A-20s and A-26s. But V-12s play a lovely tune when attached to a P-51 (or most anything, actually.)

Inspired, I just called the airport's noise office and left a recording. "I'm sick and tired of having to run out on the back patio and watch those airplanes go over and listen to the beautiful sounds they make. This is not a noise complaint, this is a noise appreciation call. Thank you for making it possible."

I'll be fun to see how they handle that at the next monthly city Airport Council meeting where the noise office has to report their statistics.

Awesome screenshots. The Mustangs and the Fortress look so good together in the sky!

And I'm sure any airport would be be glad to get a noise appreciation call. Cool idea :D

Great shots indeed, lovely stuff :)

And for the noise comment it reminds me of a certain famous avaition/airport related meme that does the rounds here in the UK every year,...

Ah, yes; I know Norman and his ilk. Sat on the board of an airport noise abatement project, and heard all the reasons why the 40 year old airport should be shuttered.

"I didn't know there was an airport there so you have stop flying."
"It's not the noise it's that sound."
"I'm an aeronautical engineer and I know you don't have to fly over my house." Which was under the ILS final approach course.
"That airplane was 50 feet over my roof, and I knew I was going to die." (Mode C Transponder recordings showed it was above the 1500' pattern altitude.)
"I don't care what you instruments show, that airplane almost hit my house!"

One annual summary of noise complaints showed that out of 432, 412 came from the same guy. Yeah, he's a dickhead.

Interesting system that shows details around CRQ at

You may have to adjust time, bottom left, to see earlier traffic if the sky isn't busy.

Nice shots, Bmbrz! Late mission, crossing the coast near sunset...what happened to number three?

Lost oil pressure flying back from Germany. I had only flown her a few times prior and had not been faithfully maintaining her as I should(SMH) and that was the result. Landing was uneventful at Thorppe Abbots, Crew chief chewed on me for my bad habits! Lol At least that was how I took it......

Cheers Chris

How old is this model now - and still at the top end of the 'must have' list. Like its real world equivalent, a timeless classic.
