In many of Germany's fighters at the beginning of the war they did not have this gauge. It wasn't until later in the war (and in the case of the later 109 variants) that they started to include them in planes. They often felt the same way about the artificial horizons. Naturally however, they rarely flew planes in bad weather to really make full use or have a need for them.

If you want you can cut&paste the text from the panel.cfg file of an American bird and paste it into the panel.cfg file of the 109. It's not hard to do even if you've never worked with panels before. I chose to replace the clock in the 109 with the VSI gauge of the 51. I made my own 2D panel using a screenshot to start with. Then I cut&pasted the P-51's vertical speed indicator into the 2D clock position and also the virtual cockpit position of the 109. You don't even have to mess with the coordinates or sizing numbers to do this - just cut&paste the gauge name.

The clock and the altimeter ARE a vertical speed indicator...

Yep, same as a clock, map and compass are a GPS
