Crankcase Cover, Pratt and Whitney Hornet

Hi all,

I've seen some 1920s-era aircraft, the Boeing 40 and Boeing 80 for example, with some kind of cover that has wedge-shaped openings on their engine crankcase. I could be wrong, but it looks like there's a plate behind the cover for opening and closing the wedge-shaped holes. Is this for controlling oil temperatures? Here's a picture showing what I mean on a Boeing 80 (Pratt & Whitney Hornet engine, I think):
