Ive an Index so still better tracking and controls (That grip actions is hard to give up once you've experienced it) but that G2 res for sims alone is a bit special

My question, as a person with a 1080 running P3Dv5 at 40-60FPS on mostly high settings at 1080p, would upgrading to a 3070 make any significant difference? Would there be any point if I don't plan to upgrade to 4k?

In theory the 1070Ti delivers a few frames less than the 1080; and the 2080Ti a few frames less than the 3070 when not using 4K. And in user benchmarks of games that are NOT FSX or P3D the 2080Ti delivers up to double the frames of the 1070Ti. So by that logic I would say that in theory the 3070 could deliver double the frames of your 1080. But probably not in P3D.

My 2080Ti just arrived and if I get it installed tonight I'll let you know my results. Apples vs. oranges, I know...

The 2080Ti is now installed. In initial tests I saw a 10-20 fps improvement over the 1070Ti when testing at KLAX ("gray and rainy" weather, medium terrain and shadow settings, minimum traffic, ORBX California, default Maule aircraft). Maximum fps achieved was 70 with average around 45 fps. I did not enable HDR lighting, bathometry or the experimental atmospheric settings.

For a more controlled test I used the default "Missing Coworker" scenario. The settings described above gave me 145 fps average at the airport and around 170 fps average in the mountains, occasionally surpassing 200 fps. I then cranked up textures to Ultra, moved all the sliders in the top half of the World panel to the right and most other settings to high, changed the traffic to 50%, and turned all the shadows and reflections on. The "Missing Coworker" scenario then dropped to around 30 fps average.

I think I read that the RTX 3070 Founders Edition is projected to be around 10% faster than the 2080Ti in1080p gaming, but I also think that will be compared to a reference card. Overclocked 2080Ti cards by partners like EVGA and MSI will probably lessen that gap, at least until the partners begin producing boutique versions of the 3070. Obviously the much lower MSRP of the 3070 is an attention-getter right now.
