Laminar flow VS turbulent flow. NERD ALERT! :D

This is the place where we can all meet and speak about whatever is on the mind.

Laminar flow VS turbulent flow. NERD ALERT! :D

Post by Medtner »

One of my favorite YouTube channels, Veritasium, has recently published this awesome video about turbulent flow.
Apart from being utterly fascinating, it is highly relevant for aviation geeks.

All the Accusim-planes are in my hangar, but they aren't sitting long enough for their engines to cool much before next flight!

So then....Do vortex generators actually create a controlled laminar flow which in turn creates a turbulent flow in the desired location(s)? And, if that is the case, wouldn't every wing style and even every wing on the same plane (port and starboard) have different angles of installed vortex generators to satisfy the flow and turbulence?

Absolutely fascinating.

Two additional things this video shows:

1. What clouds really look like.
2. What lightning really looks like.

Does anyone know what that blue planet surface is? It was shown in the video right after images of Jupiter, but Jupiter isn't that color. Jupiter with a color filter?

It's Jupiter, but in false color. They have different cameras on the probes, and they take pictures in different wavelenghts. Sometimes a positively produced false color is useful for discovering otherwise hidden features.
