Thinking of this PC for P3D v4.

Post by bladerunner900 »

Hi guys.

I'll be ordering a new PC sometime this month and would welcome comments on a system something like this. Primarily for P3D v4 but I do play other games, like Elite Dangerous, The Long Dark and Take On Mars for example.

CPU
Intel i9-9900K Eight Core (3.60GHz @ up to 4.9GHz)

Motherboard
Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO: ATX, LG1151, USB 3.1, SATA 6GBs - RGB Ready

RAM
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 16GB)

Graphics
11GB ASUS ROG STRIX GEFORCE RTX 2080 Ti - HDMI, DP

1st M.2 SSD Drive: for Windows 10 Pro
1TB Intel® H10 NVMe SSD + 32GB Intel® Optane™ (upto 2400MB/sR | 1800MB/sW)
Perhaps go smaller for this perhaps?

2nd M.2 SSD Drive: for P3D v4 and scenery
2TB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3500MB/R, 3300MB/W)

Mechanical or another SSD drive for everything else?
Example: 4TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 5400RPM, 256MB CACHE

Thanks guys.

Steve.

What I was thinking, was perhaps a 500GB SSD for windows 10 and changing the 1st M.2 from a 1TB to a 2TB version.

Would 500GB be suitable for W10? I currently use a 480 SSD for W7 but am not sure of what would be good for W10. I have a couple of 4 + 6 TB mechanical drives I could add for storage, or use them external.

I have a 1TB SSD that had worked wonders. I install all flight simulator on it and install other games on a second HDD

I just got my new Windows 10 computer up and running this week and this is the first time I've had a solid state drive, it's mind blowing. Mine is an i7 processor, 32 GB ram, RTX 2060 and a 1TB SSD, I installed FSX and all Orbx global products in under and hour. Startup time from pressing the power button to being on the internet is 8 seconds. FSX startup time is under 30 seconds, flight load times are around one minute.

I don't have P3D yet and don't know anything about it's installation size, but with my current FSX installation, Orbx global products in place but regions not yet installed, my single 1TB drive is at 203 GB.

I had ordered a new system from Jetline Systems. I opted for the i7 9700K cpu. They were able to get stable OC of 4.9 GHZ on each of the eight cores. I also went with one Corsair 2TB SSD, for now, and the RTX 2070 Super (specs are in my signature). Everything else is pretty much the same. Nice system. Those guys are really nice to work with and extremely helpful in planning a system for your needs. Just curious, did you decide to go with liquid cooling or air?

Liquid cooling for the CPU at least. I'll look to see what liquid cooling is available for other parts. Nothing is set in stone yet. I'm avoiding the 'cheaper' 2080 Ti options as some have reported over heating on YouTube.

Sounds good Bladerunner! I just couldn’t justify the additional cost for the 2080 ti right now. After most of the research I did and conversations I had with others, the 2070 super will fit my needs for what I do. At the very least, it’s actually an amazingly huge improvement over my other system, i7 950 4 core @ 3.7 GHZ, GTX 750 ti, and 12 gb RAM and a 1TB mechanical drive. The old system ran FSXSE, my ORBX addons along with my A2A aircraft and such quite well, but my sliders were all very modestly set. Night and day difference with the new system though! Good luck with getting things spec’d out and purchasing your new system. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

I'm running an i9 9900K on an EVGA Z390 FTW. The EVGA AI Overclocker in BIOS took me to 5.2 GHz without issue one.

I'm running a 512GB Samsung NVMe M.2 970 Pro for system and a few basic programs. I've only used 77GB of that so far  .

My second drive is a 1TB Samsung 970 Evo NVMe which has P3Dv4.5, FSX-SE, IL2 Sturmovik 1946 with many MODS, 5 Call of Duty games and my user folder of well over 3GB. With all that and various other small programs I've used 150GB of space.

My third drive is two 500GB Samsung 850 Evo's in Raid0 and is where my ORBX files are (one complete for FSX and one complete for P3D, 344GB total) and Mesh files (one set does both sims, 97GB).

The 9900K runs very warm especially when overclocked. Make sure you have plenty of cooling. I'd recommend a high quality AIO of at least two fans. Also make sure to turn HT off within BIOS. Your system will run the sim smoother and will run a lot cooler. Every thing I have seen from YouTubers like Jayztwocents, GamersNexus, LinusTechTips, etc and other sites say that currently anything over 16GB's of RAM is unnecessary. If you are running programs like AutoCad are heavy video encoding, or the like, then 32GB would be worth the expense. Again, just what I've heard and read. They also say that 3200MHz RAM is the good speed for gaming.

Now, I have no experience with this and can only regurgitate what I've seen on the net but Optane "sounded" like a grand idea.... but..?... Do some research there.

Happy building Sir 8)
Roger

Here is a screenshot of GPU-Z with P3Dv4.5, Google Chrome, and a few other programs running. It will give an idea of memory usage and system load. Keep in mind that my system has dual custom cooling loops. GPU and CPU are on separate 360x38mm radiators and at times my sim will heat the 9900K to over 70C. Total system memory runs near 9GB normally during simming but never gets over 10.5GB usage.

Thanks for your responses guys. I'm slowly refining my choices on spec. This is what I'm thinking so far.

M.2 512GB Intel® H10 NVMe SSD + 32GB Intel® Optane™ for Windows
M.2 1TB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe for P3D and Orbx scenery.
2TB Samsung 860 QVO 2.5" SSD for other stuff.

I have a couple of large capacity mechanical drives that I could add but will probably keep them external, to help with cooling.

I use Photoshop allot and still dabble with 3DS Max now and again, so will be using 32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz RAM to help that along.

I also take note of your advice Roger, for at least a two fan Corsair H100x Hydro Cooler for the CPU.

The case for all this so far, is the CORSAIR OBSIDIAN SERIESâ„¢ 750D. I may go larger on that, to aid with ease of access later on if I decide to upgrade things.

I'll mull this over for the next week before pulling the trigger. See if anything crops up in my thinking. This is going to have to last me some time.

Cheers guys.

Steve.

Kick ass system, somewhat best of the best as it stands right now, at least on the intel side. Though things are looking to change (AMD are crushing Intel big time in multiple industries enough that multi-threaded is looking to be a headline for software moving forward) if you where to buy right now you would be buying a kick ass gamer rig for what we have released right now and around the corner.

Rule of thumb for pc's and always worth remember as a reason to rarely hold off on a purchase, as soon as you buy it'll be outdated no matter what. So buy when you want and enjoy the kit

cheers,

Yeah. "Buy now to avoid underspending".

I will be ordering within the week. My old rig is feeling the strain nowadays.

Edit: Added some water cooling for the graphics card so probably going for a larger case as well.

We'll be expecting system specs, photos and maybe a video when it's all up and running. I documented my build for a reason that I'm sure I'll figure out at some point  . It was a real challenge to get two complete custom loops into the smallish Define S2 but it is a beautiful system and the best thing, for me anyway, is that there is no RGB. It's just a simple and powerful system. I would like to go to a 2080 Ti but alas that may end up costing me my marriage  What they want for those is criminal I say!

Happy building Sir

Hi Roger.

I don't have any video capture equipement for the PC. Never felt the need so won't be doing that but basically I'm fitting this...

Code: Select all

CPU Overclocked Intel® Core™ i9-9900K Eight Core (3.60GHz @ up to 4.9GHz)
Processor Cooling Corsair H100x Hydro Cooler w/ PCS Ultra Quiet Fans
Motherboard Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO: ATX, LG1151, USB 3.1, SATA 6GBs - RGB Ready
RAM 32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 16GB)
Graphics Card 11GB ASUS ROG STRIX GEFORCE RTX 2080 Ti - HDMI, DP
1st Storage Drive 2TB Samsung 860 QVO 2.5" SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 550MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
1st M.2 SSD Drive 1TB Intel® H10 NVMe SSD + 32GB Intel® Optane™ (upto 2400MB/sR | 1800MB/sW)
2nd M.2 SSD Drive 2TB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3500MB/R, 3300MB/W)
into this case

I agree with you about RGB so won't be having any of that nonsense. As for the 2080Ti, yes. It is overpriced in my opinion, but what can you do. When something newer and better comes out I have no doubt the price will drop. But how long does one wait. Besides, I want a new system now. My i7, SLI, Windows 7 system has served me well for many years but struggles nowadays. Upgrading to W10 would not take. Not even a clean install so it's time for a new start.

Steve.
