Would you like to FEEL the RR Merlin roar? Then you NEED this!

Post by GunninGamerz »

A while back I was scrolling around the forum here and noticed another user who recommended a Buttkicker that they had installed in a P51 sim pit. I had heard of them for years and I decided to look into them further and to contact the company. They sent me 2 of their Buttkicker Gamer2 units in exchange for a review video on our YouTube channel. I have yet to do that video since it has been hard for me to show off something you can not see but instead feel. However, I have been showing it off in our Twitch livestreams and recommending it to everyone I know. I am here to say that if you are into simulators this is a must have add-on! It is unreal what it adds to the experience in the sim. The feel of these engines in your seat is so immersive. When you shut it off it suddenly feels so empty, I try to imagine flying without it now.

If you care to check them out I recommend the Gamer2 for most people. They also provided me with a little extra of a discount to share with my community that I would like to share with you. The code is: GUNNINGAMERZ to save 25% off your order. I am not paid to recommend their products, just one happy customer! https://thebuttkicker.com/all-products/

If you care to get a small taste I included this short clip highlight from my Twitch Stream last night. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/412954120

More on this to come...and of course that promised review video! :D

That was probably my P-51 simpit you are referring to and I can't agree more with your quick video.
Here is a link to the page where I described my setup. Scroll to the second half of the page. https://a2asimulations.com/forum/viewto ... &start=450

My reaction was a LOT like yours when I first started the engine. Giggling, laughing and shouting. My wife thought I had finally lost it!

I now have 2 BK's with separate cables and one amp. One BK and cable is on my desk chair and connects to my PS4 and the other is mounted on the base of my sim seat. I just
connect the cable to the amp for whichever system I run. For the P-51, I can feel the fuel pump vibrate, the engine crank and then when it starts, the rumble!

I just finished 2 hours of BFV and THAT is a LOT different with the BK. I can feel the recoil of my weapon, the impact of getting hit by bullets, a tank rumbles by
and shakes the seat, on the receiving end of a mortar, tank or bombing run and you will feel the earth SHAKE! Now get IN a tank and you feel every bump, the BOOM of the main gun
and the growl of the engine. Get in a chopper and the whomp, whomp, whomp makes you feel like you are in a real chopper!

Yeah, I kinda like the BK system. :D

Gunner, please tell Tony, shadyowl2, I said Hi. I'll give him a call soon.

Take care

There it is! That is the post I had read. Thanks for that link again and your post back a few months ago. Reading it gave me renewed interest in further researching the Buttkicker that I knew about but had never given enough thought. A week later I had one and could not imagine not using it now!

Now we will wait for others to add this to their set-ups and either thank us for the recommendation or be mad at us for spending more of their money!!

Yeah, the Buttkickr it revolutionaized my simming, and has given my cockpit build a new dimension. But when it overheated and stopped working, I upgraded ... to a Pearl Throne THumper!! Just as good, but with slightly better controls (and bright red). Everyone should have a Buttkicker!

I have overheated mine 3 times turning it up to a insanely high level while listening to some bassy music (EDM). After 10 minutes it comes back on and never kicks out on me in normal useage. It must have a heat sensor inside to protect it. Have you tried it again to see if it is actually dead? If so I better be a bit more careful!

I believe the thermal sensor (at least the one I found) is in the shaker. It almost looks like a diode. Mine broke when the cable got snatched out of the shaker itself. I repaired it by adding connectors for R/C aircraft. Now if it gets caught, it simply lets go at the shaker.

Anyway, I researched the one broken component I had and it was a thermal sensor. I simply eliminated it since I don’t crank it up that much 😁

Another vote in favor of Buttkicker, AuraSound, Clark Synthesis, etc, shakers. I run with Buttkickers with adjustable cutoff frequency subwoofer amps. Big engines with some bass are fun! Plus, if you fly anything with guns or if there are nearby explosions, you feel it. It really changes the simulation and really puts a polish on VR. Amazing immersion.

Been aware of these things for a while but been thinking about getting one in recent days and saw this! VERY interesting!
Pardon my ignorance but how would this work if you are using headphones? Mrs Dreamsofwings doesn't appreciate the sweet music of a good piston engine so I am using a headset, with trackIR pro clip attached to it and linked to the headphone socket on a SoundBlaster X7. Would this only work if I unplugged headphones?

The price makes is a little hard for me at the moment. They are so expensive for the hardware to get it over here in the UK. I could easily save but because its a saving issue it'll have to come behind gpu and hotas I'd like to get. Ive just caved and spent my latest savings on a new desk today lol

I only ever use headset and it works great, comes with a simple 3.5mm Y cable. One side headset, one side Buttkicker and plug it into the PC.

Dreamsofwings, although my crew chief enjoys the Merlin sounds when hearing a real plane, the roar and rumble coming from my pit is not appreciated. :D

I too only fly with a headset and it works great. The only issue I had was I use a wireless headset that connects to the PC with a USB plug. By doing that it disables the onboard soundcard rendering the BK useless unless you use a software program to split the audio. If you use a wireless HS, check the link in the second post above to see how I got the the system working. If you have a wired HS you should not have an issue.

Here is a link to the BK setup guide. https://thebuttkicker.com/content/BK-GR2_QSG.pdf

Thanks both for confirming that!

I had a look at there seems to be a bit of a stock shortage in the good old Blighty although if you really want to it is currently available on Amazon for the equivalent of $320.

I think I will just have to train the copilot cat to run into my chair leg whenever I shout "NOW!"

Always found these an interesting idea, but two things put me off..

1) The price, as Lewis said. I'm sure it adds a lot but it doesn't seem like a high priority purchase compared to other PC upgrades.
2) The effect being heard around the house. My 'man cave' is upstairs and as our house is only 20 years old it's made of matchsticks and cardboard like most new-builds these days. Sound travels far. In the lounge, which is not directly underneath, you can just hear the hum of my fairly quiet PC which stands on carpet. If I had a BK on my chair, the rest of the family would probably go crazy from the sounds. Anybody have experiences to share in this regard? :)

Sorry, can't help you much there. I am on the bottom floor which is the concrete foundation, padding and then carpet and a very think chair mat. The unit itself is pretty quite in my opinion, at least at the level I use it and in my in my studio. If you turn it up high it can make some noise for sure. I find that at that level it is not comfortable to use and only funny to see what it can do for a few minutes. I suppose it could also get noisy on certain chairs. Mine is hooked up to a very heavy DxRacer that weighs a lot, at 67 pounds just for the chair.

I think the worst possible case would be strapping it to a metal folding chair, on a second story wood floor in an old farm house and listening to some techno. Would be funny as hell to see a video of someone doing that though!

OK, well thanks anyway!

The only consolation for now is that my ancient little 5.1 speaker set (just realised they are almost 20 years old, wow) has a decent shoe-box-sized subwoofer, which sounds fairly meaty with my A2A aircraft - from the inside at least. The Comanche doesn't have much bass from the outside, it's a bit more like an angry wasp, but from the inside if you pull the headphones out of the instrument panel, it puts a smile on my face.
