Alan Bean, Apollo 12 lunar astronaut and accomplished artist, has died.

I'm currently reading 'How Apollo flew to the Moon' by W.David Woods, which includes an account of how a lightning strike could have ended Apollo 12's mission before it had a chance to leave earth orbit. I recommend the book highly, as it brings home the risks men like Alan faced almost as a matter of routine.

RIP a human hero, a real hero for all humankind whatever the nation. Leading the way to what I hope Space X and other companies are now doing to continue the greatness of what we as a people as a species can achieve.
