AT-6 Crashes out of my home airport.

Looks like it must have hit something trying to land on that road.

It just happened, so it will be quite some time before the NTSB gathers all the evidence and makes a judgement.

This is the initial FAA report: http://www.asias.faa.gov/pls/apex/f?p=1 ... H+AMERICAN
The aircraft involved: https://www.flickr.com/search/?q=N3198G
There is quite a bit of warbird activity that centers around Falcon Field, including of course the CAF Airbase Arizona (where, among other warbirds, the B-17 Sentimental Journey and the B-25 Maid in the Shade are based).

Very sad too see. From what I heard from talking to friends at falcon, the pilot was a member of the CAF out of the base in Mesa. I spent a couple months there volunteering and became aquatinted with the pilot. He was a very friendly, stand up kind of guy from what I saw. Young, around 40 and a very qualified and skilled pilot type rated for just about every plane the CAF had. I was on board the C47 in December with him at the controls. I had a veteran friend who flew C47s during the war along for the ride as a surprise for him and Jesse(the pilot) bent over backwards to make Bryce's(93 year old ex pilot) experience a memorable and meaningful one. This surely is a deep loss for the warbird community.
In the rear was an exchange student. The crash is along the NW corner of the field, a good distance from the runway. Very unfortunate.

A fatal crash of any aircraft is always sad, but more so if you have some association with either the pilot or the aircraft type.
In my case, I had the privilege of flying the SAAF Harvard 7676 just before they were put up for sale.
Pleased to see that the CAF left her in original SAAF livery.
My condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
