A-N navigation

Post by av8erjm »

Reading the posts about a big twins and some calling to the old days of radial engines, something jogged my memory about the A-N low frequency radio navigation. No I'm not old enough to have used it, but I remember during my early days of aviation, listening to the old guys talking about. So I guess my question is to anyones recollection has anyone tried to emulate that into the world of simming. I checked Avsim and Flightsim in their forums but couldn't find any mention

Hi Jim,
Try this over at DC-3 Airways

Not sure where that is going to take you, or how far. I think Robert41 on the A2A forums may have played around with this a bit.

There are some folks who use it on DC3 Airways. I haven't looked into it that much, as I like to program the flight into my GPS and drive on, but here is a link to some Radio Range flights, including Ernie Gann's AN-21: http://dc3airways.com/flights/radio_ran ... _range.htm.

Here is some more stuff about radio range on the DC-3 Airways site: http://dc3airways.com/our_fleet/radio_r ... _range.htm. There's also a file that contains many radio range stations, but alas, it's for FS9.

Also, here are some nifty details concerning navigation using radio-range: http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/ndb-nav-history.htm.

I think there's enough info there to satisfy your interest and get you back to your VORs and your GPS.

The FS9 Radio Range radio gauge itself will not work in FSX. Adding the scenery will give FSX many more NDBs that will work as a standard NDB, but some do conflict with the default NDBs. Similar freq. close to each other. I have read some forum posts about making an FSX version, but nothing for sure yet.
