Graphics Card upgrade - Advice from the community required

Post by Lewis - A2A »

Okie dokie then Ladies and Gents,

Heres the deal. I can upgrade my graphics card and would like the community thoughts on this. I currently run an Nvidia 460GTX and looking to upgrade it to a new Nvidia card.

My system specs-
CPU; i7 2600
RAM; 16GB
MOBO; ASUS P8P67
PSU; 700Watt

I was thinking an Nvidia 770, so thoughts?

thanks,
Lewis

For me, return for money has been just great, can recommend. They won't set you back too much if you take any reasonable deal, and just about anything runs at highish to max settings with nice frames. I run i5 2500K @ ~4.3, 16GB, 650W. My card is Gigabyte's 2 gig.

The 770 is a great card for the price! You can't go wrong with it. The only thing I might suggest would be to check out some of the factory overclocked options like the "Superclocked" line from EVGA for example. It helps get every bit of performance from the card without having to do any tweaking on your end.

Yup -- you'll want all the video memory you can "when" you go to P3D!! (and you will someday :D )

Just to use this chance to ask where will the additional video memory make practical difference? I'm probably more than a year away from doing complete computer update, but just to have an idea what to plan for. P3D runs quite nicely outside of largest cities - the magic setting seems to be to keep the shadow map count at medium.

I have an EVGA GTX780 that has been very good. It can be overclocked but I have not felt the need to. There is also the newer GTX780ti which is even better. (It might be better then the Titan).

The newer Nvidia cards are great because they allow you to use ShadowPlay to record videos.

I think the most reasonable answer to this is that P3Dv2 users will benefit because it rely's heavily on the graphics card now versus the CPU. The additional memory should make things smoother and allow for more complex scenery settings.

Lewis,

The GTX 770 4GB card should be a great card now and for at least another couple years to come. Maybe down the road you could add a second card for SLI which should make a considerable difference once it's implemented into P3Dv2 fully. My GTX 680 2GB card works quite well and I believe the 770 out performs it, especially the 4GB ver.

Enjoy your new card! 8)

Yes I've used Tom's a lot. I must be honest here I'm an IT professional specializing in a lot of this stuff, but I am a little out the loop because of being a daddy and also wanted some simmers perspectives as often your standard gamer stuff tends not to apply. For example I'd never recommend an ATI card if use is to be mostly for FSX/P3D as these tend to be more tweaked for the nvid cards, where as your typical gamer will look heavily into the great ATI cards because they are such high performers across the board.

cheers,

EVGA is releasing two GTX780 cards with 6GB GDDR5 memory, date to be determined. Cost is $550.00 and $570.
