My avatar disappeared and cannot upload from computer.

Joachim,I remember hearing about that problem a while back for some forum members.
It hasn't happened to me although I was a very early member to Shockwave Productions forum when they had just one product (Firepower for Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3).What you could possibly do instead is to upload your avatar to image shack

then use your profile and enter any of these

Got the pix above my signature but cannot put it into the left panel.
