I must say that I am firmly of the opinion that if one runs out of fuel/charge in any vehicle that displays, in real time, how much distance one may roughly have before having to top up, the commander of the vehicle kind of deserves sitting there waiting for 10 hours to pay a hefty bill and carry on.

You're never that far from a filling station that a brisk walk would put right. Or stick out a thumb. Come back with a gallon of your choice of fuel. Sorted. Lesson learned.

Funny, what am I doing wrong? I use EV's for more that 7 consecutive years now and always made it home. Ohh, I see, forgot to tell you that I have a remaining range indication and I can read it. Maybe that's the difference...
Re: A factoid
Personally, I venture almost as far as the range display suggests is sensible to go. One's margins may vary!Ron Attwood wrote: ↑15 Sep 2022, 14:22 You're never that far from a filling station that a brisk walk would put right.
Even I remember time when we, as kids, never could afford cars with things such as reliable fuel gauges. By reliable I meant, usually, any one that showed correctly at least at one certain fuel level. Everybody knew how to do their... kilometreage on the bottom of the receipt. Not entirely unlike it has always been done in general aviation, that reminds me! Satnav of course was still only for guiding things such as strike aircraft, and for rich people of course, such as some people's parents.lonewulf47 wrote: ↑15 Sep 2022, 23:33 Funny, what am I doing wrong? Re: A factoid
It would be pretty awesome to have only nuclear and hydro power and everyone has enough energy to run electric cars. Until then, it's kind of dumb to be powering EV with coal and gas. You can't power EV on wind and solar alone.

When my son and I traveled to Vegas on our bikes I carried 5 liters of fuel for his bike as his tank is 3x smaller than mine. We stopped at several gas stations in the desert to only find tumble weeds rolling through the supposed open gas station So like you said there is always gas nearby if you have planned out your trip properly.Ron Attwood wrote: ↑15 Sep 2022, 14:22 You're never that far from a filling station that a brisk walk would put right. I gallon of gasoline has the equivalency of around 33.4 kilowatt-hours of energy

...which would be more than 100 miles for an average EV... Go figure I run my Model3 at an average of 17 kWh/100 kmJJB17463rdBombGroup wrote: ↑19 Sep 2022, 00:52 I gallon of gasoline has the equivalency of around 33.4 kilowatt-hours of energy

Your Model3 takes some 61,2 MJ to do 100 km.
According to the quoted figure, a gallon of gasoline (not petrol, as the gallon could be a different one!) has some 120 MJ of energy in it. Thus, one liter would hold about 31,8 MJ.
So, in terms of energy efficiency, your Model3 would do pretty close to 2 lt/100 km. Which would pass my roughest sanity checks. As a fuel efficient gasoline-powered vehicle could achieve perhaps 4 lt/100 km, that would indicate roughly twice the efficiency in the powertrain+battery+wizardry of the EV, which would be more or less thereabouts.

Re: A factoid
I would get around 3 kWh/ 100 km but my range on my ebikes are around 60 km as I live in a hilly area and my battery packs are 1,920 watt hours (around 2 kWh roughly) . I am kind of heavy too at 215 pounds and carry about 25 pounds of tools with me on rides.lonewulf47 wrote: ↑19 Sep 2022, 08:05...which would be more than 100 miles for an average EV... Re: A factoid
Just got back from a 1050 mile round trip to Seattle visiting relatives in our 2012 Honda Accord 4 cylinder coupe. We got 36 mpg at mostly 75 mph. We stopped a bit more than half way with relatives going up and coming back. Filled up three times and had about a quarter tank when we got home. I think about $150 for gas. We could have done this with an electric car since we stopped overnight with relatives and could have charged up at their house and at our destination outside of Seattle in which case the main costs would have been three bottles of expensive looking wine.
Ryzen 7 5800X3D liquid cooled, OC to 4.5 ghz, Radeon XFX 6900XT Black edition, 2 tb M2 drive, 32 gb ddr4 ram, Asus Hero Crosshair VIII mother board, and some other stuff I forget exactly what.
Re: A factoid
Honda would be a lot easier for the average Joe to service though. Seems like it's all about life circumstances and needs. Many of us poor folk can never afford a new EV, and used EV you have to wonder how long the battery will last before you have to spend several thousand to replace. Can we get a Toyota Corolla EV with $16000 MSRP? Hopefully some day.bullfox wrote: ↑23 Sep 2022, 21:22 Just got back from a 1050 mile round trip to Seattle visiting relatives in our 2012 Honda Accord 4 cylinder coupe.
