Not to be ignorant, but where are you choosing the powerplant?

In the maintenance hangar, the option in the upper left lets you choose between the IO-520 and -550.

Thanks for that! I'm still getting up to speed on this bird and reading every single thread, plus the manual. I want to be able to fly it by the book instead of just Ctrl +E and takeoff.

Thanks also to others that answered my beginner questions. This forum is great!

I am using the 520. My F33 has a 520, and it is comfortable, to me. I may look at the 550, at TBO. I think I will switch, if I find myself needing better short field performance. The question is like the AC Cobra argument of, 427 or 289. The 427 is brutal, but the 289 fetches more cash, and is a much better driver. To Scott, Lewis, and the entire A2A family, congratulations, on your achievement. You all really hit this one, out of the park.

I'm running the 520. Probably just my penchant for nostalgia, but I wanted to experience the Bonanza as it would have been back in the day, fresh from the factory. I don't have any GPS equipped either. I might move up to the 550 someday, though.

I fly N228Q. I use the bigger engine, 50 BHP more.
I flew from my home base yesterday Fayetteville N.C. to Norfolk Virginia. 4 Passengers.
Average passenngers in back, 125, 131, and average passengers in front, 160, 155. Fuel was 3/4 full. And 16 lbs of baggage.

It took off with 87% prop, and still climbing high rates. I leaned it out to 14 GPH at cruise, @ 5500ft. And achieved around 165-169 MPH with the winds. The power is great, but if in IMC or IFR For busting clouds or anything, watch that airspeed for any shallow dives. Things can get out of touch real quick.

Bigger engine all the way it almost seems like a waste to have the smaller engine as an option.

Bought the plane and immediately put in the 550. Just finished a sightseeing journey from Catalina Island, CA to Ushuaia “End of the World”, South America with it. Thumbs up =)

I was using the 520, but switched to the 550 after reading this post. Smoothest takeoff yet, but I think it had more to do with patience on waiting for the speed to build up.

I had a chance to fly a real V35B this weekend. Friend of a friend who owns one. He put a 350 hp Cirrus engine in it, had to modify the cowl to make it fit. It was a true kick in the pants when accelerating down the runway. Climb out was 2000 ft/min. Cruise at 22 on the manifold and 2400 on the RPM was 170kts.

I chose the 550 for my Round the world flight. After reading this thread, I plan to go back and fly the 520 to see the difference.

I may have went through a few 520's flying over California when I was first learning how to fly the Bonanza by the book.
