Totally agree: lighting, camera quality, and so many other things can "trick" the eye into thinking the same airplane is two different colors, even though they're not. Here's an example - check out how the green is more pronounced in the first picture, whereas in the second picture, it's almost black:
At some point, as a repainter, you've looked at a plane in every light, at every angle, and you just have decide what the "true" color is. Then you test, and retest, and test a couple more times, looking for that same feel that the original paint has. And if you're lucky, you've gotten everything just right, such that, in the sim, the paint color actually
does depend on what angle you're viewing it.
