182 Autopilot

Post by golfguyw5 »

Coming in for a landing when I turn autopilot off the planes jerks violently and it takes all I can do to straighten it out in time to make the runway.
It also does this in normal flight.

Hey Dennis,

Do you have a hardware axis assigned to elevator trim?

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick:

That was the problem. Deleted the duplicated setting and all is well. Thank you so much and best regards,

Dennis

You're welcome Dennis. Yes, if you're using a hardware axis for elevator trim, it won't move in unison with the simulated trim servo when the autopilot is engaged. This means you can end up with the aircraft drastically out of trim when you disengage the autopilot.

For example, if you engage the autopilot in cruise when the aircraft is nicely trimmed, and subsequently disengage it during the approach at much slower airspeed, the original position of your axis will tend to cause the nose to pitch down rather abruptly!

All the best,
Nick
