C172/P3Dv5.1HF2: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG

Post by willig »

When I load the C172 and "rain" starts, shortly after P3Dv5.1 HF2 stops working with the error message:
This device (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080) stopped working for the following reason: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG. Do you want to exit P3D? Yes.....
I updated the NVIDIA driver from 466.47 to v.471.11 but no change.
Further I checked with the A2A updater if the latest C172 version is installed.

At clear sky or clouds no issue. But as soon as it starts raining simulation stops.
It is also no issue when Carenados PA-28 Archer or LM types are loaded.
Thanks for feedback to fix the issue.

If you're not running your system outdoor in the garden
I'd suggest to have a look at the CPU temperature at high load.

Hello willig,

Are you using any other add-ons such as ActiveSky?

In any case, I'd really recommend that you do a clean update to the latest version of Prepar3D. v5.2 and the hotfix for v5.2 included lots of bug fixes.

You could also download a test version of the Windshield.dll from here and use it to replace the installed version. By default, this file is located in the following folder: "C:\Users\[UserName]\Documents\Prepar3D v5 Add-ons\A2A\Gauges".

Thanks,

Hi Nick,

Thanks for feedback.
Unfortunately replacing the Windshiel.dll did not help. After about 20..40 sec. P3D stops with the DXGI_Error message.
The only problem I have updating to v5.2 is availability of add-ons (manly Flight1's G600) for this version.
I need to check how I could migrate without losing Flight1's avionics.

Yes, I am using ActiveSky to inject weather conditions.

Hi Nick,

Today I updated P3Dv5.1HF2 to P3Dv5.2HF1.
Unfortunately it does not fixe the DXGI stop.

Next I uninstalled AS and checked again. No change. After about 10 to 70sec. the simulation stops.

Further I checked the issue with the A2A C182 and PA-28: Same problem.

I replaced the RTX3080 v.471.11 (GRD) to the (SD): No change. 🙈

As a last thing I checked with Carenado's PA-28 Archer: No problem.

I have only a DX problem with the scenario P3Dv5 rain and A2A C172/182/PA28 I doubt this is a driver/HW issue!

I did run the following test programs to check HW and driver:

- dxdiag
- OCCT stress test
- GFX Bench
without any issues.

What else could be done to find the source of the DXGI problem? Any log files to check?

Hi Guido - thanks for the updates and apologies for the delayed response.

One thing I'm wondering is whether you did a clean update to P3Dv5.2 HF1? For example, did you delete the files generated by P3Dv5 when you made the update? If not, this would be the first thing I'd suggest to try and eliminate app hangs. The software actually includes a shortcut in the main P3D directory to allow you to do this and remove *.cfg files and cached shaders etc.

If the problem persists, you could try delete the Windshield.dll from the folder I mentioned above. This will disable the dynamic rain effect on the glass, but should hopefully prevent the error message you're seeing.

Thanks,

Hi Nick,
Again thanks for support.

Q: Delete the files generated by P3Dv5 when you made the update?
A: I cleared the P3D shader cache and as instructed the clouds .cfg.

Q: Delete Windshield.dll from the folder.
A: I switched the Windshield.dll to off (Windshield.dll.off). Outcome: During the test of 45min. no DXGI stop.
Next I switched the Windshield.dll on again. Outcome: The DXGI stop was back again
Remark: No visible rain drops (dynamic windshield effect) on the windshield!

Hi Guido,

Once again, thanks for the update and sorry for the slow reply. Now that I'm back home for a few days, I'll get the latest beta for ASP3D installed and see if I can replicate this issue.

Best regards,

Hi Nick,

Back again I cleared first DX-Cache and Shader:
C: Properties > Disk Clean up > DirectX Shader Cache
c:\Users\P3DV4 x64\AppData\Local\NVIDIA\DXCache\
C:\Users\P3DV4 x64\AppData\Local\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v5\Shaders
And updated to the latest Nvidia driver v471.41 GRD

Next I tested the 3 different Windshield.dll versions with cleared shader/cache (dll: they all have the same size and contend but different dates!)
Now rain and rain drops (dynamic windshield effect) are back again but the error stays: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG
I also tested with EA on/off but at the end no difference: DXGI stop.
