GPS 295 and GNS430

Having only just purchased this aircraft add on for FSX I am very pleased with it, but am having two problems. I cannot find out how to programme the ICAO airfield codes into the "Direct to" field on the 430. Pressing the "Direct to" button brings up the correct page for entry of the airfield identifier, but I cannot work out how to make any entries in that field. In the real world, the codes are entered by using the knobs on the right hand side of the unit, but this has no effect at all in this simulation. Can anyone explain please, in simple terms for someone who is not particularly computer literate, how to do it.
Similarly, exchanging the 430 for the window sucker mounted 295 has not worked as pressing the "On/off" button has no effect and the screen remains blank. Can anyone tell me what to do to activate it, as it is very useful to use this whilst retaining the DME on the panel for when I am flying without a flight plan.
