FSUIPC is not required, however some users, including me, recommend it.

This sounds a bit misleading.
FSUIPC shouldn't be recommended to run the C172. You do not gain or loose anything if you have it or not.
in general, FSUIPC is very recommended as you have much more possibilities, e.g. assigning your hardware.
But this is valid for all addons, even, FSX standard.

I do not have or use FSUIPC and I have no issues with any part of flying my C172. Just love this girl! She behaves great both on the ground and in the air.
