Scrambling squadrons from threatened airfields?

Post by 33lima3 »

Having been playing BoB2 in RAF campaign mode solidly for over a year now, I should know the answer to this. But I've been using it mainly as a generator of missions with the campaign largely providing the context, rather than playing the campaign as such. Which is probably why I'm on the brink of defeat!

So, in an effort to stave this off a little longer, and maybe do better next time; is there an easy way to get aircraft off the ground when, in the Ops Room, you see that their airfield is likely soon to be bombed? I'm pretty sure leaving this to the AI routinely results in a WAAF ruefully announcing that such-and-such a squadron has been caught on the ground and we don't know how many got off.

There seem to be indirect methods like ordering patrols, or assigning extra interceptions, that happen to have the desired effect, probably more through luck than anything. But what I'm looking for is a reliable way of calling the virtual Duty Erk at dispersal and telling him to 'Get them up!'

TIA!

I think I've found the answer to this. If you click on an airfield and then on the 'General' tab, select 'Patrol', by default it launches a patrol from one of the squadrons based there. Haven't checked if it can be repeated till all the base's squadrons are tasked, if it houses more than one, but seems likely.

I play the commander game. From the map I watch LW flights develop and try to guess their altitude ( hopefully some patrols already up) , target direction and likely targets, strength etc and start adjusting readiness. I use the intercept or hostilities dialogs to select the targets and select squadrons to intercept. Alternatively, patrols are sent to landmarks in their path or CAP their own airfield. Thats when I like to frag in.

IIRC squadron readiness, fatigue, morale influence how well they respond. So as the commander it helps to know which groups are up the task.

Thanks Vox. I've played my first but not-quite-done RAF Commander campaign almost entirely 'hands off', just tweaking the Directives a little and later, revectoring patrols to hostiles. Next time I think I'll be a little more adventurous, not just in an effort to improve on the AI commander's results, but because it looks like playing the wargame side too will open up a whole exrea dimension to BoB2, which is really two top notch sims in one package.

Very interesting Lima, I personally don't think of BOB's campaign as a wargame , or a flight simulator. For me its a dynamic campaign with a strategic layer that I can choose to interact with. The ability to frag into 3d gives a sense of a larger virtual world beyond the map. It also adds relevance to each mission flown, and strategy I've chosen.

I feel tne game' strategy layer is a creditable representation for the player of some of the challenges that were faced by RAF and LW strategists.
