BoB bubble gum cards

Post by 33lima3 »

Anyone else remember collecting these? Found this nice Flikr page which illustrates the collection of someone who got the whole set at the time:

Lost the ones I had originally, but managed to get a near complete set from eBay for a good price. One of many items produced at the time of the movie's release, like the Dinky Spitfire & Stuka (rather poor models which I never had, and pricey compared to an Airfix, FROG or Revel 1/72 kit). Captions to the cards obviously freelance, compared to the events depicted in the movie.

These completely bypassed me.

I was 14 in 1969 and probably the prime age for these cards.

I can remember buying the ones on the American civil war that had come out a few years earlier, they were quite gory for the time.

Ah, I remember those ACW cards - they came with reprints of Confederate dollars - I think I may still have one of those somewhere.

The REALLY gory ones were the Mars Attacks series:

Slightly earlier possibly, but the 'Planes' set was amongst my favourites:

And then of course there were the smaller cards that came with Typhoo Tea, when sold in those little paper bricks - I still have near complete albums for dinosaurs and famous aircraft, and recall collecting one on warships. Teabags have a lot to answer for! :)

An impressive collection of aircraft!

I collected the tea cards, they were Brooke Bond and the little album you stuck them in cost 6d (pounds shillings and pence then). I pestered my parents. aunts and uncles to look out for certain cards to complete my collection.

I have complete sets in the little books of Transport through the Ages, British Costume, The Saga Ships, History of the Motor Car, Famous People 1869-1969. Why have I kept them into my sixties? Probably because they represent a simpler time and a considerable investment of effort.

When you look at them the artwork is very good and the descriptions on each card were very informative.

Day still doesn't start right without a couple of cups of tea.

Just so - to adapt the USMC colonel in Full Metal Jacket, we gotta keep calm and drink tea until this coffee craze blows over.

You're quite right, it was Brooke Bond not Typhoo cards I was thinking of. And the cards with warships - I recall the one of HMS Dreadnought - were I think actually cigarette cards. I also have an album of space race cards in an A5 booklet produced by Walls to promote their (Skyray?) iced lolly.

The cards I found were actually a great source of info until you could afford a copy of the Ian Allan or Blandford volumes on the subject, or even one of those small Hippo ones - still have mine on Aircraft of WW1. Sadly I binned the scrapbooks into which I pasted my Airfix (mostly) kit illustrations and potted histories when I could afford the books. As you say the artwork was lovely to behold, Barracudas bombing a blazing Tirpitz, Spits shooting up 110s and RE8s strafing Rolands strafing in the Dogfight Double sets, etc etc.

And before the instructions went visual and multi-lingual, it was an object lesson to learn that part 62 was a director control tower, not just something you glued on top of parts 60 and 61.

Thankfully I still have most of my Airfix catalogues, plus a few re-acquired since. Little did I know that one day, I'd be virtually flying them all and more besides, thanks to companies like Rowan, A2A and their mod communities.

Amazing that you guys still have all those cards! My own Batman bubblegum cards collection long ago bit the dust.
Regarding your "Planes" set above, lima, could you please tell me what is the one in the bottom left corner?

That was a pic from eBay ShadowShooter, of a set for sale there, haven't re-invested in one of those yet, but will do one day, they are lovely colourised photos. The one bottom left is a Coleoptere:

Some of the designations are a bit off - the one bottom right is clearly a Hunter but another pic of the set, seen below, shows it's labelled as a 'Mk7 Swift' which is clearly wrong.
