Luftwaffe pilot suit re-texture?

Post by 33lima3 »

Had a look but can't find one, hence the question - has anyone made a mod re-texturing the German aircrew uniform?

At the moment they all look rather like dark, which is rather beetle-like and stands out a bit strongly.

Something in Luftwaffe blue-grey or khaki/light earth, would both look better and be more realistic, I think. Minded to try myself but maybe someone has already made one?

Hi 33Lima3. I think the texture is he11_pil.dds. No mods that I know of although I found an older version https://www.mediafire.com/file/s2wi4jtc ... t.zip/file. There’s a sort of wrinkled texture in it for the leather jacket and trousers that looks not too bad for the figures inside the aircraft. But it maybe won’t lighten up all that well as it includes a lot of dark patches, so a similar replacement texture or a more suitable or authentic one might look better. If you don't fancy having a stab at editing it and no one else jumps in who might be a bit more clued up about the uniforms than I am then let me know.

Great, thanks for the tip Boreas! I'll see what sources I can drum up - some recent Ospreys have pilot figures, there are some similar aircrew figure paintings in the final volume of the later version I now have of the Orbis partwork 'World War 2' and I have the Blandford 'Airforce and Navy Uniforms of WW2' somewhere. And I've just found some decent colour pictures of actual aircrew uniforms on mannekins in the Salamander BoB book By Richard Townsend Bickers which, despite the frequent jingoistic touches in the text, isn't bad and has lots of good illustrations of such things.

Here's an interesting website: https://www.luftwaffesupplies.com/colle ... -equipment

They manufacture what appear to be very good quality reproductions of uniforms, mainly for re-enactors. They claim they are carefully based on the original designs. Here is their version of the M35 Fliegerbluse, standard issue for all Luftwaffe personnel from 1935 up until December 1940:

It's quite dark when compared to their version of its successor, the M40 Fliegerbluse, that was issued in December 1940:

Exactly how accurate their colour repros are I can't say, but they do seem to think the one current during the Battle was pretty dark.

PS. If anyone out there has a secret dream of doing their hair with a genuine unused bakelite Luftwaffe comb, they can fix you up. Buy 5 and you get the original paper bag!

That's affordable history! :)

Those pics won't display for some reason Shadow, either in the thread or in a new tab (still on IE11 here when using Win 7).

Would be inclined to darken the shade anyway to allow for 'scale effect' never mind the effects of sun and washing.

The pics of LW uniforms on mannekins in the Salamander BoB book are credited to the Luftwaffenmuseum. One (on p.61 for those who have it) 'represents a navigator or observer from a bomber crew' and has 'channel trousers' which are dark brown like on the BoB2 aircrew figure, except for large patch pockets on the front which look like LW blue-grey. Jacket is described as 'the dark blue fleece-lined flying jacket' and is very dark, with a large black fur turn-down collar. The outfit is about as dark as the BoB2 aircrew figure's texture, but at the very least I would be inclined to lighten the latter to allow for scale effect and change the brown jacket to blue-grey shade. Either that, or go for the 'lightweight canvas summer flying suit', which is on p.59 and looks very similar to what was worn by the Heinkel/Casa2111 crews in the BoB movie.

Hi chaps, I'm not sure if this image I found is accurate but following it brown color was for the early uniform (1939-1941) during battle of britain period. So Blue color would be for 1941 to 1945. But the early brown for the flying uniform was not so dark like the game texture, only the brown jacket was dark so I'm not sure if pilots flew using brown jacket too, if so the texture game is accurate.
