T- very interesting insight, those articles on the 109.
Amazing that you know even about the status of Canadian warbirds? Living near Duxford musta had a helava effect on your detailed interest in these ( world) matters, as well as your passion for these craft.
I was surprised at the very low maintenance hours on the 109 ( full engine rebuild 150- 200hrs) which has informed me as to why there are so few of these things around ( apart from Germany being a complete shambles at war end without hope of of manufacturer support) Who wants an old German fighter where you have to rebuild the engine every 6 months if you wanna get some decent flying time, let alone transfer between air shows.
Mebee the Germans thought producing new engines rather than maintenance ( as did the Americans later in the war;3 x engines shipped UK per. Mustang) was the answer. The Brits, schnoop to the 'nth degree, didn't see it that way, initially (41-43) having one engine per aircraft; however the RR engines were superbly built and the field mechanics as superb, a testament to the 80% flight operation status of the RAF with effectively so little resource.
I imagine that these 'throw-away' Daimlers didn't help the Luftwaffe's cause much.
It also makes sense that the Spanish 109s ( as were also used on the '69 BoB movie ) had in fact Merlin ( as in Spitfire ) engines - this musta been a conscious move; a longer life engine and support from Rolls Royce, and they had the plans ( patented) of the airframe . Jus such a pity they look so godammedawful - cloning an upright V into an aircraft designed for a inverted V seems completely incorrect, like cross breeding a race horse with a goat. Especially when the goat is as beautiful as the snub-nosed Emil.
That........ is what makes this particular (1940 model ) aircraft so rare, and magnificent. I wish I could see this thing fly and hear the whine of the injectors and grinding of German flywheel steel. As well as touch it to feel the magic of that bygone era of those knights of the sky.
( I imagine yer not allowed to touch anything at Duxford, especially the fabric covered control surfaces of an early Mk1)
How many original 109's are there - do you know? Are there any in the UK?
The warbirds display pilot Mark Hanna was killed in one some 15 yrs ago? Wonder if that had to do with maintenance issues?
(Apparently Hanna and his father flew the Mustangs in Spielberg's Empire of the Sun some 27 yrs ago ( starring a young Batman) - what magnificent flying that was!
I, was very definitely, that kid, when first seeing that movie. Utterly brilliant. Relegate all other films to the trash, frankly.
amatus sum amatus es amatus est.........
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VNTQSbvlutg
( I reality ground attack fighters would never fly so low, as apart from not having isometric purchase in 'walking' your guns onto the target, it would be bloody dangerous )

Re: User VIDEOS
I browsed the comment section on that vid at youtube, and
it appears even with the price down to $3.75M, no one is
keen on buying the 109, as its engine is out of hours now.
Someone will have to conjure up new parts for a rebuild, or
else create a new and better designed (longer lasting) equivalent
which can fit the space, but of course the latter wouldn't
be authentic. Otherwise it would have to be a static display,
and I can see people might balk at 3.75M for that. I wonder,
if a german group got hold of it, could they entice Daimler
to take up the challenge...

Re: User VIDEOS
I saw Mark and Ray Hanna many many times at Duxford and their flying was awe inspiring at times.
Ironically one of the "Buchons " flying from Duxford at the moment has been repainted into the BoB film colours and personally i think it looks lovely.
One of my photos.
No one has ever really said what caused Mark Hannas death ,this is an interesting but sad thread http://www.pprune.org/archive/index.php/t-146178.html

Re: User VIDEOS
T - your are a very fortunate man to have seen and vid'ed all this.
The BF109,P38,Hurricane vid - the 109 display is really radical, the display driver musta been working off a hangover, or his wife jus left him when considering how he throws that thing around the sky, and does some serious high speed.
Who was the driver- is he famous?
And the sounds are unbelievable - may I clone some for BoB2? Problem getting rid of the human noise, background kiddies screaming etc, although can be done - jus takes hours.
Have you any 'clear' no-noise 109 sounds on file that I may pinch?
Thirdway thru the high speed low dives, you can see plenty of un- burnt fuel stream ( dark smoke)
Driver musta been balls to the wall - Also wonder if any H2O or nitrous O2 in this machine - it is a late model (109G-6 ?) Using that stuff, is also a way to stuff the engine big time ( ask the dragsters)
I am unsure as to mixture issues in these Daimler injected engines? Possibly the smoke is due to that?
I only ever seen 3 Spit displays ( I think all our Spits now sold offshore - before the govt could react and ban selling what is also part of our heritage) and other than the sound and look, the displays were pretty ordinary compared to what you have vid'ed.
How can New Zealand, with an economy only 100th size of ours ( I hear NZ is not a place to go to earn any good salary and by the way thousands of emigrated South Africans are returning to the land of crime and honey, or is it milk and money app Israel ) be able to afford 20 or so Spitfires ( I think) while we no longer have not even one? Mebee it got to do with aviation patriotism around Al Deere? But we had Sailor, who was Deere's best friend ? Possibly concerns about taxation, or, as it has happened, you nottallowed to export vintage aircraft anymore, so the owners saw this coming and exported quickly? Or mebee the really rich and famous have fled SA with the likes of LonRho Anglo American and de Beers and their trillions are now in NY and London stock exchanges, like it was before Aparthied. It takes a big millionaire to run a WWII vintage aircraft. And big millionaires want their money in safe, liquid places.
NZ also have a whole lotta Hunters - which reminds me, when 17, at an Air force recruitment drive, we saw a display ( for only about 50 of us ) of a black unmarked Hunter ( in case shot down over the enemy) which took about 10 mins from startup to landing. Only later did I realize that the 'planes agility would have been greatly helped by having only a few hundred pounds of fuel on board & without wing tanks as it seemed to take off and go vertical within a few hundred meters or so.
This reminds me much of that day:
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4pzOXPOT2AE
I decided to do the academic university thing, and ended up being embroiled in undercover on liberal ( anti-govt communist?) students for my troubles, during the war, under threat of bursary removal; I was a top student with very long hair, was an artist and smoked like the locals.
However, two fellow schoolboys that were there that day, died flying in that war ( Alouette & Hunter ) and another got burnt very badly ( Reims Cessna Skymaster)
Another, boringly flys freight as Captain of 747s based in Saudi - whenever I see him, generally on an internal domestic flight when he is coming home, he appears to have the most boring of all professions. He with some to other guys ( inc an old girlfriend's brother) suddenly pitched up at my student digs in Durban one day ( 77 or so) dressed in full South African Air-force uniforms; I was shocked to see this and they gleefully told me that " what they were doing was top secret" ( so much for secrets) - they were doing full- house conversions and training on SA's latest Mirage F1s in the event of these aircraft being needed to repel possible communist air power ( it was suspected that Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo were about to get MiG 23s flown by Cubans and the Hunters wouldn't stand a chance, as is exactly what happened in Angola some ten years later. And South Africa came off 2nd best in that challenge - even with her 5 mile turning F1s, and possibly also due to some of the enemy actually being MiG29's with 'look-down, shoot-down capability, and mebee flown by Russians. You can't mess with a MiG29.
In terms of guns & short range missiles only, I would back a MiG any day even against F16' and F15,s in terms of ACM, regardless of the yank's Top Gun & Tom Cruise B.S.)

Hi Hazzie, feel free to use any of the soundtracks if you can make use of them.I haven't got any clean audio so to speak ,i'm afraid what you see is it.
I doubt Black 6 was hammered ,conservation was the main thing so it was just a mixture thing on the day.

That Hunter display you posted was brilliant, that valley/hole it disappeared into was quite unnerving.
We still have Hunters displaying over here one of the best known ones is up for sale i believe https://www.facebook.com/MissDemeanourOfficial

T - ;specially made skins & movie for you & those at Duxford, in the colours of these now museum aircraft.
These machines were undoubtedly formidable, as is well illustrated in the opening scenes of the '69 movie.
I wanted this to be over Duxford, but BoB2 instant mission doesn't allow Duxford
UK's BLACK-6 and SA's WHITE-6 ( no racism intended. it jus so happens;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFXfScqhXXw (HD)
A Tale of two Emil's.
Captured in North Africa by the SAAF ( with probable help from the SAS & LRDG ) and shipped back to Durban in 1943 ( I think they painted the underside with RAF 'Duck-egg Green, the tyres also look 'jimmyed' & nicely varnished)
However, a tribute to South African forces in WW2.
(see how crappy our museum is - half the lights arn't working)
Ships waiting for berthage - bringing back captured 109s to Durban '43.

Re: User VIDEOS
T - yeah I spent the weekend repainting those skins - invariably I find another hundred things wrong with the CPT base files where the original painting is incorrect in detail, or is jus missing, so spend hours fixing that at well as the repaint. ie - see the leading slats internal texture with ribs and support arms - looks real good in flight.
Have you tried out these skins?
The guns in the P40 flight very interesting sound - sort of popping sound a second or two after you see the cordite smoke from the wings. Speed of light vs speed of sound.
Actually very different to what Spielberg used in The Empire of the Sun movie ( see earlier post )
Most machine guns at a distance have a popping sound or like firecrackers, even a .50. When we hear AK's sometimes at about third of a kilometre around here at night, they sound like tiny firecrackers, and the police heavier calibre guns (7,62 +) are more like 'pops'.
The RAF Browning sound I last posted is very similar to the stationary P51s guns, and is based on a .50 recording with a breech sound incorporated.
Listen to it at http://www.mediafire.com/listen/8ag2f5a ... unbrwn.wav
The colour of the desert Luftwaffe :
I wonder if BLACK 6's colour is too red, or if they used two colours ( red ochre and yellow sand) The Luftwaffe definitely had a sand colour, and the Stukas wee also painted that. Something I noticed in the museum photos.
Made another movie for you out off the various clips and spare clips done to make these videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piZDyvnetHE
appropriately the music is by a modern German band called 'Milky Chance'
Note in the original footage at the end, the massive exhaust oil burn on the side of the fuselage - you can see these machines were hammered in the real operations.
Also what do you think of the engine sounds taken from your videos?
screenshots from vid
see the lines of the canopy joint are now evident
see the leading edge slats ribs and arm structure

T - one of the things that has irritated me, for some time, has been the non-texture of the 109 cockpit surround / EXTERNAL VIEW.
Especially as I fly from outside views.
You inspired me to re-look at the 109 skin ( re: Black 6 ) and I have now gone into some of the missing detail - ie: the cockpit
firewall, sides, floor and seat / plating ( I had done some basic & urbane repaints of Galland / Molders machines previously some years ago - I think I may try a proper job now - BoB2 may even use them>?)

HAZZIE,
Where is your African Leopard SKIN for the Emil? I see that you have made one.
I shall like to use it. Especially during my LW Campaign, where I now have total air superiority! Trying to kill the last few flyable Hurricanes!
Or.. a South American Jaguar skin would be acceptable, too, for camo, when I invade Nord Afrika!
Don't much care about the minor details of the cockpit, as I rarely take the time to look that closely.

Re: User VIDEOS
Steekman,
I had a CTD when finishing this pattern, and the CoralDraw recovery slightly misaligned about 20 of the 120 layers in the CPT file, including important ones as panel lines and rivets, and they need to be re-registered.
I dunno if yer ever made a skin, but the layering gets hectic, especially the sub layers when you are fro instance making new rows of rivets in a small area ( which are in the order of tens of thousands, if yu want to be accurate )
The bakup file is also a generation away, so I dunno if to fix the recovery or import from the recovery onto the bakup, which may make the situation worse.
However I will fix this and post the skin, as well as another spotted skin which will then be easily cloned from the patterns made
of one of the following (with spots on the wings not sklints)
Me109-E4 - 7/JG5 1941
109-F2 - I/JG51 1941 ( Moulders )

Hayzie,
Even back in the year 2000 when Rowan's BoB1 had only .X8 textures to faak with!
Not easy!
Other volk are better skinners than I, even tho I now know how to paint & mask with .DDS textures.
After a few years and with BoBII, I was painting (.DDS or .PCX) instrument gauge faces,
which are near & dear to my heart, and that I desire to read TRUE!
Later... with the new & vast wealth of knowledge that the Internet has provided my prior ignorant soul with,
I try to reproduce all of the Targets in England to look TRUE as to summer of 1940.
Still not done doing so, altogether, but have enough righteous info to do so,
when I feel like fakking with the BoBII BIN files again!
Still some more historical HAA guns to place, London, Bristol, and Thames & Medway - north & south,
and faakking with sister MAINWLD, too!
So...
I have no time, or plans, to paint skins on aircraft,
which other truly artistic folk such as yourself, can do better than I can.
Aloha!
Oh yes, I have. Painting Emils.I dunno if yer ever made a skin,

when I feel like fakking with the BoBII BIN files again!
Still some more historical HAA guns to place, London, Bristol, and Thames & Medway - north & south,
and faakking with sister MAINWLD, too!
So...
I have no time, or plans, to paint skins on aircraft,
which other truly artistic folk such as yourself, can do better than I can.
Aloha!
