I have just been informed that Pierre Closterman has died in his 85th year.

Rest in peace, Pierre, and fly a long peaceful way to heaven.

Sad indeed, "The Big Show" is my favourite WW2 memoir, very evocative. You really felt for him as he takes his beloved Tempest "Le Grand Charles" up its last flight...RIP

2006 seems to be the year for many vets.

On the other hand 85 is a good age, two weeks ago a LAN mate of mine, former Bundeswehr para, was found dead at 33. Still don't know what to think about that.

My last great uncle died in mid January. This month would have been his 85th birthday. My grandpas died with 66 and 72 respectively, both vets. One even marched for the Kaiser when 17.

A veteran of the Kurland pocket uncle Hermann was a russian POW for much longer than a soldier of the Wehrmacht. The russians did not like those chaps who were fighting on for so long.

Nothing special about him, just a corporal who will never be named in any book.

Nevertheless he was a positive spirit, hated ALL politics and made jokes and to us kids always was kind and friendly - unlike many older men who more often than not showed grumpyness - first ;-).

May they all rest in peace.

A sad day. First Soupy posts about Bunny Currant and now this.

Time is a great teacher, but it also kills all of it's pupils.
God save the King!

Deary me. The Big Show is a book that I borrowed from my uncle years ago, and then bought on eBay. Outstanding man.
