Replay videos using FRAPS?

Post by borton »

I've just added FRAPS to my armoury and have tried out the recording of videos direct from BoB ops.

The result is quite good but the video files are huge! I have used Windows Movie Maker to reduce the file sizes but, unfortunately, it also reduces the quality. FRAPS recommend the use of Tmpgenc and VirtualDub. I've tried VirtualDub but is nothing like as simple as their directions claim! :?

Has anybody mastered this and, if so, would they kindly point me towards the appropriate thread postings (if any!).

I've tried Search but I can't find the wood or the trees!

I've only been doing a very little bit with this. I've used virtualdub. I can't really give you any real tips or pointers but I can say that the codec you use to compress it does seem to make a big difference how it looks. I've used the Xvid codec with good results.

Good luck and have fun!

If either of you have an older PC lying around, say a PIII 550 or better, with a decent amount of RAM (256MB or more), why not try a TV-tuner card? They can be had for under USD $50. You can get full 30 fps motion out of it, and it doesn't slow down the gaming machine.

Just set up the tuner software to get input from whatever source you wind up using from your 3D card to your TV tuner card (composite, S-video, whatever). Most likely, if your current system's game card is less than 4 years old, it probably has TV out on it (Usually S-video). So you play the game, pipe the video through the TV out, record it on the other PC in xvid (yeah I recommend it) format or whatever you are into, and even include the audio, if you bother to hook up sound card line-out (on game rig) to tuner card line-in (older rig). Radio shack and other places of its kind have all of the cords you'll need to do any of this stuff. But online, they are much less expensive.

Borton are you running WindowsXP?
If do you can use the Windows Movie maker as I do. it s reletively simple to use but you have to compress into wmv files but you get decent quality for the size of the files.

Yes, I am. As you say, it is relatively straighforward and worth the reduction in quality.

Have you visited IL-2 Movie Maker's Forum?

A search could have result there.

I've been giving VirtualDub a whirl and the results are very good. Unfortunately, the resultant files are considerably bigger than the FRAPs ones - in fact they are ginormous.

Am I missing something here or is VirtualDub not intended to reduce file sizes as Windows Movie Maker does? :?

Borton,

1 reason can be:
Audio track ".wav, pcm" files are huge,
Selecting ".mp3" compression will reduce file size.

For your Consideration:

Some of the following may be of use>>>

"How to reduce the file size of your video using free software"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Software required:
1) Virtualdub (Download from http://www.virtualdub.org/, no installation, just unzip and double click on VirtualDub.exe to run)
2) XVid Video Compression codec (Download from http://www.xvid.org/ and install)

3) Lame mp3 codec (Download from http://www.mp3dev.org/ and install)

Steps:
1. I presume you have an mpg file and sufficient space in your hard disk.
2. Start Virtualdub by double clicking VirtualDub.exe(These steps use version 1.5.10)
3. Load the file into Virtualdub: File, Open Video File, and select
4. Set Video compression in Virtualdub: Video, Compression, Select video compression XviD MPEG-4 Codec, Configure
5. Configure the video codec: Set Target quanitizer to 10.00 (Experiment to obtain required quality. Higher values reduce file size, but also reduce quality, I found 10 to be about alright), OK to close XviD configuration, OK to close Select video compression.
6. In Virtualdub, set Audio to full processing mode: Audio, Click "Full processing mode"
7. Set Audio compression in Virtualdub: Audio, Compression
8. Select Audio compression: Lame MP3, 44100Hz, 118kbps ABR, Stereo, 15KB/s, OK (Experiment to obtain suitable quality. I found this to be the minimum satisfactory.)
9. In Virtualdub, select the portion to be clipped using the slider and buttons on the bottom.
10. In Virtualdub, save the file: File, Save as AVI..., choose a file name and save.
11. Wait till the processing is completed. Then try opening with your player.

To cut the clips into pieces, you can select suitable parts in Virtualdub, or use Movie Splitter (Download from http://www.movietoolbox.com/ ). The unregistered version can split into 3 files only. They also have a tool Movie Joiner which can join files. The unregistered version can join only 3 files max.

Unfortunately, the xVid codec does not come with a help file. Here is an Unofficial FAQ: http://ronald.vslcatena.nl/docs/xvidfaq.html .

(from http://www.kannadatorrents.com site was down - link would not work)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I use this version of XviD: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Koepi_XviD.htm
Salute!

I'm afraid I fell at the first hurdle. All I can see that is downloadable on these sites is source code, that I would not be able to compile.

Am I missing something here?

Rooted around the xvid.org site, out to a "user support" link, and found this: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/xvid.html

Also got the same link by trying "xvid codec" on altavista search.

Somehow I have managed to locate and download the following:

Xvid -1.2.-127-25022006
lame-3.96.1

Thank you all, particularly iou1! Iou1, I shall install said codecs and follow your instructions to the letter.

Tally-ho!
