Windows 7 - 32 or 64 bit?

Post by Baza »

I've been grounded for months now, since my games machine's Vista went belly up.

I'm going to install Windows 7 but I'm not clear on the relative merits of 32 or 64 bit. Can anyone advise, please?

Hi Barry,

Probably the main advantage of 64-bit for us gamers. Is the fact that it can use more than 4 GB of memory. If the machine in your signature is capable of running 64-bit, and you are able to add a bit more memory. Then it's probably the way to go. If you are going for a brand-new machine, then it is definitely the way to go. Others will probably have different ideas.

If you plan on inserting more than 4GB of main memory on your computer, 64bit is a must. Also some programs by now have a 64 bit version which for example might be a bit faster. BoBII is 32 bit only. 32 bit programs run under a 64 bit operating system as well.

However, drivers for 32 bit Windows 7 will not work on 64 bit, so make sure that drivers for all your hardware exists. IIRC there is a Microsoft program that checks this automatically for you? A sort of "check my computer is 64 bit Windows 7 ready" program.
