Re: NA Journey [Anaconda Copper]

This isn't boring at all. Between the nice pictures and the narrative, I feel like we have our own tour guide to Montana. You might have been planning on doing this anyway, but can I suggest heading north to Glacier National Park? You're pretty close already, and it's an amazing place.

Re: PC Aviator FSX Holy Grail?

I received a similar-sounding email a few months ago, but it was from a real estate company offering ocean-front property in Kansas.

Re: my mistake

Spad,
Sorry if I caused you any distress. My last couple of comments were meant to be general thoughts about the importance of accident awareness/prevention. I really didn't intend anything like a jab regarding your initial post.

Re: To all those with a bad case of the 'I WANTS'

I WANT . . . and graphics program that makes clouds look soft as cotton, where the precipitation actually "feels" wet, and the air passing over the plane so realistically that you really "feel" the wind on your face. Three words for you: REX Soft Clouds. Sorry, but you'll still ...

Re: my mistake

Maybe I'm the odd ball out here but I think it depends on the context. On the contrary, I would hope it's the ones posting these videos for laughs who are the odd ones out. as a reminder of the seriousness of flying IMHO, this may highlight their best value as a teaching tool: to fight complacency....

Re: EAA Crash at Oshkosh

Incidents such as wheels up landings or other circumstances which involve successful resolutions or incredible airmanship are certainly of interest to the community, IMHO, and I've often learned a lot from the ensuing discussions. I think I see what you're saying, but accidents that did not involve...

Bruce is banned for outranking and owning more A2A planes than me!

EGT vs Speed

This past weekend, I was curious to what extent running at peak EGT versus 50° ROP versus 125° ROP (best power) would affect airspeed, so I did some quick tests. For all mixture settings, I ran the engine at 2300 RPM, at an altitude of 8500’, with an OAT of 8°C. Running at 50° ROP...

Re: 'Spitfire' Mk. 26 gear up landing

"As the aircraft descended in the overhead the pilot became aware that throttle movements were having no effect on engine thrust and on base leg he became aware that the propeller was missing." I suspect by the time he turned final he became aware that his heart was in his stomach. Serious...

Re: What do you think?

Well, the Aerostar was offered with a pressurized cabin option, though if I'm not mistaken the A2A Aerostar is of the non-pressurized variety.

Re: EGT vs CHT

I would venture there are two ways of looking at EGTs. Besides being an indication of how much energy is leaving the engine as heat, they also indicate quality of combustion. In this regard, you could think of leaning the mixture as setting up a race between the engine becoming more efficient via be...

Re: better then book figures

It's generally preferable to lean using the EGT or--my new favorite way--by ear. Try leaning to peak EGT or 50 degrees ROP and see what you get.
EDIT: if you're going for all-out speed you could do 125 degrees ROP, but you'll blow through more fuel doing it.

Re: better then book figures

How are you leaning it? Peak EGT, 50 degrees ROP, or something else?

Re: better then book figures

Did you test it with and without the wheel fairings (the wheel pants)? I did some experimenting this past weekend and I found they gave me another three knots, regardless of what type of prop was installed. This was at 8,500', full throttle.
